The pathway for the Cleveland Browns to acquire Kirk Cousins from the Atlanta Falcons has gotten a bit more interesting.
It’s been reported that Cousins will wait to waive his no-trade clause, per Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk. To avoid making a similar mistake, he will wait until after the 2025 NFL Draft to decide if he wants to consider joining a new team. He does not want to be in a situation where he lands with a team that uses a high asset on a rookie quarterback again.
In 2024, Cousins signed with the Atlanta Falcons on a four-year, $180M contract that guaranteed him the starting job. Despite this apparent commitment to Cousins, the Falcons surprisingly selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This led to his obvious succession over Cousins this past season, but much faster than many anticipated.
The Falcons recently picked up Cousins' $10M roster bonus for the upcoming season. Despite committing to Penix moving forward, this shows that the Falcons are still planning to keep Cousins. If a team wants to acquire him, the veteran quarterback must be traded and waive his no-trade clause in the process.
Besides recently acquiring Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles, the Browns have remained silent on their quarterback plans for 2025. With Deshaun Watson projected to be out for the entire 2025 season, Pickett is the lone healthy quarterback on Cleveland's roster. It appears that Cousins is not interested in mentoring any rookie quarterbacks this season, which means he would be a serious option for Cleveland if they don’t select a promising rookie quarterback with their top upcoming selections.
We’ll see if this report on Cousins will spark interest in the veteran Falcons quarterback.
