talking about Tracy McGrady, he said Tracy wanted to come here, there was a package that was agreed upon, but that it was the SUNS who balked at an extension. They simply wanted him to forgo his opt out, but when tracy wanted the extra years, they walked away. you all already know my feelings about this.

Most likely a good call on BC's part.

He also said they decided to bypass all the big men once they saw the market value. He said if he gave Memhet Okur 8 million a year, Bickley would have called for his head yelling out Luc Longly.

He said that Amare and JJ look awesome this summer. They have been working out together down at the arena for a little bit now.

He also said that they will address the 5 spot. Depending on whether they match Q, it could be by FA, vet min or trades. He made a point of saying trade opportunities will come out.

can you say penny hardaway. the suns were watching out for themselves by not wanting to tie up to much of their future in a player who has a bad back and who had quit on his team.

Doesn't Johnson look awesome every summer? Reports of his summer awesome-ness are getting almost as annoying as Hardaway's claims that he was "finally healthy."

this is from jed over on the phxsuns.net board

The younger Colangelo had some interesting things to say on Bickley's show this morning. Here are some paraphrased highlights:

Nash was our top choice. Evidently, we liked some of the star talent out there (Kobe, T-Mac) but were reluctant to break up what he sees as a talented core with high character to take a chance on doing the star thing right away. In other words, they wanted to give these guys a chance to pull it off.

Along those lines, he also feels that the Nash and Q signings make both our team and locker room stronger. We like the work ethic they bring and the leadership both guys offer.

He said we were at or near the top of the race for T-Mac. A couple of factors got in the way of us making the move. First, we would have had to give up a lot of talent. Second, T-Mac wanted a 3-year extension for upwards of $106 million. Between his knee and back, we evidently balked at that.

He's happy we have guys in the Olympics. He's evidently not impressed with players bagging out for minor reasons.

Evidently, no one expects Amare to have to carry the load at the five until we address that need. He said we may play some small lineups, but that will not be the norm. He didn't say it directly, but inferred that the whole running Amare at the five long-term was never part of the plan.

The five is the major issue we will be addressing soon. We're looking at FA and at trade options -- though we aren't going to make the need force us into a bad move. He said we could have done something on this summer, but were not willing to spend silly amounts on the guys out there. He claimed people would be calling for his head if he went out and "pulled a Luc Longley" by signing Okur, Foyle or even Dice for the money they are commanding.

106 million for 3 years? 33+ million per year? shaq, garrnet and duncan dont make that kind of money why in haveans good name would he think that he should get it? tmac isnt worth that kind of money or even close. garrnet and duncan should make more then tmac.

I guess 106M$ is what the total of his deal would have been with the additional years. 6/yrs/106M$ same as the max for Kobe.

That three years is obviously a mistake. It's not possible under the collective bargaining agreement.

Doesn't mean he can't ask?

I was wondering if the extension price was an issue and I guess this confirms it.

Good decision, IMO, from someone who has screwed up so many times...

I'm happy we didnt get T-Mac. We would have had to destroyed our team apart just to get one guy.

Guys I cant believe what Im hearing. If we got tmac, then would have amare, nash, tmac, and possibly Q. That's damn good. I think they shouldve definetly gone for it, but I can live with what we have. :)

We'll see how well he plays with the Rockets. T-Mac is going to have to completely alter his game if he isn't going to just turn into a taller version of Steve Francis.

I always see guys bashing JJ on this board the guy averaged over 16 ppg almost 5 rpg and almost 5 apg. That's not too bad IMO.

And he is still on a rookie contract. JJ may never be a star but the Suns don't need that and neither does a championship team.

No, it's not too bad, but it's not "awesome" either. I just wish the Suns would stop trying to make Johnson out to be a superstar and accept that he's an average-level starting SG.

I hear ya, but he has all the tools... Never know he could come out next season and average 20 5 5 and then IMO he would be a lot more than average.

I usually agrre with you. But JJ is alot better than an average SG.

Not to mention he has very good heighth, and an all around game, with little to no weakness...

JJ can defend. pass, rebound, score, create his own shot, AND has a good attitude.

JJ is no superstar, but he is atleast a "B" level SG that is still developing.
