In his closing commentary on Tuesday’s “Real Sports,” the longtime TV host (Bryan Gumbel) said Stern had “always seemed eager to be viewed as some kind of modern plantation overseer treating NBA men as if they were his boys.”
I cant stand Stern too, he may be a lot of things but a racist is not one of them.

IMO, stupid, senseless comments by Gumbel.....................

The NBA is basically modern day slavery i agree. Except, The Slaves are millionaries, drive expensive horse bugees, live in upsacle bunk houses. eat extravogant leftover slop. Not to mention they are obligated to have Sex with numerous amounts of women who are basically disgusting with their nice round booties and man made breasts. All for what. Being forced to Jump high and run fast and put a round object into a circular hoop. This is ridiculous come on NBA owners these Slaves still have to take care of their wives and kids, plus Girlfriends and Kids and Groupies and Kids.

Borrowed from a friend on Facebook.

So Hank Williams Jr. says Obama is Hitler.

Bryant Gumbel says David Stern is a slave-owner.

Hyperbole is the lowest form of expression because it means the speaker is unable to express rational arguments to back up their ideas any longer.

One big difference: Gumbel won't lose his job over his comments...

I listened to Gumbel's comments and he never accused Stern of being a racist. He accused him of treating NBA players as if they were his slaves. That would include all of the players, white, black, US, and foreign.

Slavery in and of itself has nothing to do with skin color. It has to do with how someone is treated and in the context of being "owned" and that was the view that Gumbel was trying to convey.

Stern is on a power trip and thinks the players are his property and that he can take away their rights whenever he wants to. In that context, Gumbel's commentary is correct.

I don't recall any plantation owners having white slaves.

I highly, highly doubt that was the message being conveyed. The NBA is predominantly black, and seems to me the message is/was that Stern is trying to exert his authority over black people.

I think his exact words were chosen very carefully, and he should have chosen better. He could have said "he's treating them like slaves" and it could be defended that your point is what he was saying.

Choosing to use "plantation owner" is deliberately conjuring an image of civil-war era South with a white owner of black slaves.

All jmho, of course.

Edit: All that said, the whole thing is ridiculous. Yeah, sign me up to be a slave, if that's what being a slave is.

Actually, Williams never said Obama was Hitler directly. What he said was that Beohner(sp) and Obama playing golf together would be like Hitler playing golf with the president of Israel. He never said, "Well Obama, who is Hitler...".

That said, I'm tired of these people trying to compare their plight with those of a people who were bought and sold like cattle, ripped from their families, forced to work and live in unspeakable conditions, and who's only means of freedom was death. I'm not black but comments like this I find embarrassing.

No, his statement is not correct. No players has a gun to their head to play basketball in the NBA. Or to play basketball in general. ALL players sign a contract and when you sign a contract then you are bound by that contract. It's that simple. Slaves on the other hand had no say in anything.

You have to be kidding me. You don't think it has anything to do with the vast majority of NBA players being black, Gumbel being black, and Stern being white?

Gumbel is accusing Stern of being racist, which is ridiculous. It is much worse than what Hank Williams Jr did (who seemed to be more about enemies playing golf together) than anything.

Gumbel should be fired.
