The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were worried they would not be able to bring back veteran wide receiver and fan favorite Chris Godwin in free agency. The former Penn State Nittany Lion had a diverse market for his services and was even offered more money elsewhere, he revealed, but he wanted to remain with the Bucs.
Ian Valentino of the 33rd Team praised this move when he listed the best free-agent signings of the offseason so far.
Valentino writes, "One of the most surprising early outcomes of free agency was that Chris Godwin never saw the open market. With Tee Higgins on the franchise tag and a dearth of other options, Godwin was in line to get a sizeable pay raise despite being 29 years old, limited to the slot, and coming off two season-ending injuries since 2021. There was so much money in the market and playmaker-needy offenses that Godwin could've pushed for a bigger payday for more years."
Godwin being back with Mike Evans and second-year receiver Jalen McMillan should have the Bucs offense humming once again. Despite the departure of Liam Coen, they team promoted Josh Grizzard and now he and Baker Mayfield hope to have the offense playing at the same level it did in 2024.
Had they lost Chris Godwin, it would have been a major hit to the offense, even more so than losing Liam Coen.
