BUCS-LIONS DEAL DEAD, FOR NOW

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that the trade talks between the Lions and Buccaneers for a flip-flop of the No. 2 overall pick and the No. 4 overall pick are dead. For now.

But the source says that the Lions also are talking to the Redskins and Falcons about a possible trade of first-round, top-ten picks. And the Cardinals (we're told) contacted the Lions for the first time on Wednesday to discuss the spot.

The Redskins hold the No. 6 pick, the Falcons hold the No. 8 pick, and the Cardinals hold the No. 5 pick.

The source also says that the Lions are confused by the Redskins' interest in moving up, since Washington doesn't have many other 2007 picks to offer. In addition to the sixth overall selection, the 'Skins have a fifth-round pick, two sixth-round picks, and a seventh-round selection.

We're also told that the Lions prefer to make the trade before the draft. We recently heard that if no trade is accomplished before noon on April 28 and if receiver Calvin Johnson is available at No. 2, the Lions would select him and then trade his rights to the highest bidder. Apparently, the Lions have figured out that actually drafting Johnson and then sending him to someone else would open the organization up to plenty of criticism if Johnson becomes a superstar (especially in light of the team's past misadventures with top-ten receivers). It would be far better to get out of the No. 2 spot before the picks start to fly.

Wonder who their "sources" are???????

And Mike Sherman is no longer going to coach the Cardinals.

:D

You people go on mocking the Sherman era, he lost less games than any Cards coach in history!

AGain, the beauty of a secret deal is that it's a secret, the minute you make it public by actually signing the guy and letting him play on your team, it ceases to be a secret.

Some day people will realize the sheer brilliance of Detroit getting the Patriots to pay Colvin's contract all these years while he was secretly a Lion.

This better be just a rumor. We have too many holes to fill to trade plaers and or draft picks is nuts.

My dog ate my Value Chart. Anyone know how many points moving from #5 to #2 is worth?
I did this exercise a month or two ago and concluded that we'd have to give up every draft pick except the 7th round and maybe the 5th.

Anyone think we consider Thomas so good that we'd give up our #5, #38, #69 and our 4th round pick for him? If anything, Rod Graves has stated he'd prefer going in the opposite direction - adding picks not giving them away.

I wouldn't. We're not even sure the Cards like Thomas better than Levi Brown - or for that matter wouldn't draft Peterson

(Note - Like it or not, Somers picked up this PFT report and discussed it on his blog, so it must have legs).

There is a 900 point difference between the number 2 and 5 spot. The cardinal would have to switch spots and give up their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th round draft picks in order to get close to compensation with the lions. It is not worth the trade. I know you can throw in some players like Berry and Okeafor to compensate draft picks, but i think that is unlikly to happen.

Somers thinks it's bunk:

A bad deal

Profootballtalk.com is reporting the Cardinals have called the Lions about the possiblity of trading up from the No. 5 slot in the draft to No. 2.

People I talked to today doubt seriously that happened, but maybe someone put a feeler out there. Who knows?

I want to see the conversation asking owner Bill Bidwill to trade up.

"Uh, yes, Mr. B. See, we have this deal on the table that's going to cost you a boatload more money, and we'll lose draft picks in process. I know, we only have six to begin with and we've always said we wanted more picks in the draft, not fewer. But we have a chance to take this offensive tackle, Joe Thomas. What's that? Well, yes, we took an offensive tackle at No. 2 a few years ago, that Davis kid. You're right, that didn't turn out too well for us."

If the Cards trade up, giving up at least one pick, then, we can enter TC with, at most, five holdouts.

When is the last time the Cards traded UP? I personally do not ever remember but they might have in the low rounds. That would seem to be against the Bidwills mode of operation.

Did we not on one occasion not even draft a guy when our number was called and just let time expire? Seems like I recall something like that as I went beserk on my couch.

We would be total fools to make such a deal especially since we might get the same guy with our 5th pick. Not even the Cards are this crazy.

The Cardinals want to move up to the #2 pick to ensure that they can select Levi Brown.
