TAMPA — Sua Opeta was considered one of the frontrunners to win the Bucs’ vacant left guard job last season before he suffered a season-ending knee injury early in training camp.

The free-agent signee had started 10 games over the previous four seasons with the Eagles and was considered a big loss at the time.

Of course, the Bucs were fortunate to also have Ben Bredeson, who stepped in and played well enough over 17 starts to earn a three-year, $22 million contract.

Still, they were impressed enough by Opeta to sign him to a new one-year contract.

Opeta will add experience to a dominant offensive line that returns all five starters.

The Bucs were fortunate that those starters missed only six games last season, five by the tackles.

Opeta’s experience will help. Of the six offensive line reserves on the roster, he is the only one to have made an NFL regular season start.
