After a good season in which he led the national league in saves, Greg Holland signed a one-year, 14-million dollar deal to ostensibly become the closer for the St. Louis Cardinals. Last year, sure-thing closer Seung-hwan Oh (since departed for the Toronto Blue Jays) no longer appeared to be the effective pitcher he once was. Trevor Rosenthal, who dreamt of becoming a starter, couldn't prove that he had in him to be the dominant pitcher he was once was. With health questions and long-term effectiveness surrounding him, all the teams at the major league level have passed on him. He's now a free agent.
