NEW YORK -- Randy Johnson moved a step closer to joining the New York Yankees when commissioner Bud Selig approved a proposed trade between Arizona and New York, The Associated Press learned Monday.

New York was given until Thursday to work out a contract extension with the five-time Cy Young Award winner, two baseball officials said on condition of anonymity. Johnson's current deal pays him $16 million in 2005 and expires after this season.

The Diamondbacks, as reported earlier, will get pitcher Javier Vazquez, pitcher Brad Halsey, catching prospect Dioner Navarro and $9 million for Johnson, who will get a 72-hour window after the trade is approved to sign a two year, $32 million extension with the Yankees.

Also, the Diamondbacks have agreed in principle to obtain Shawn Green and approximately $8 million from the Dodgers for Navarro and two other players. The Los Angeles Times says it's for Navarro and one or two prospects. Peter Gammons believes this may free the Dodgers to sign free agent Derek Lowe. The Diamondbacks are expected to sit tight for a while with Vazquez and see what offers they get from teams like the Orioles, Tigers, Phillies and White Sox for Vazquez.
