The Bengals say they have narrowed their potential choices for the No. 1 overall selection to four: USC quarterback Carson Palmer, Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich, Kansas Sate cornerback Terence Newman and Michigan State wide receiver Charles Rogers, although Rogers is viewed as a long shot. The word around the league meetings this week was that the Bengals have already opened negotiations with the agents for both Palmer and Leftwich, meaning it's likely a two-man race. The quarterback who makes the more favorable deal is the one the Bengals will take.

They sound like the government competing for the services of the lowest bidder.

I can envision a competetion between Leftwhich and Palmer to see who can come up with the most outragoues contract demands.

Something along the lines of what Pace is asking for? $25 million signing bonus, $7 million a year for 5 years...

The Bengals have alreadt, awhile ago, contacted Newman's agent for his contract demands also. The pick will come down to Newman and Palmer. With Newman being their #1 choice but they don't think he should be the #1 overall pick. That doesn't make sense to me.If he's your #1 rated guy then why not take him at 1?I guess they think QB's have a much greater value, which they do.

I do not think these are the same old Bengals. They seem to have a plan and are not your father's oldsmobile.

John, I agree. Cinci has had a wonderful off-season.

Off the top of my head, I'd rank these teams at having had the best FA performances so far:

1. Cinci
2. Buffalo
3. New England
4. Atlanta
5. Arizona

The Jets, Skins, and Green Bay are disaster areas.

Don't forget the Iggles under the "Disaster" heading.

The Skins should probably replace the Cards in the Top 5. They're a better team right now than they were last season, by far. The Cards FA season has been a wash, at best.

No way I rank Cinci that high. They lost Spikes, arguably a top 3 MLB, and replaced him with who, Hardy, if I'm not mistaken? A guy that has underperformed the last few years and is now being moved inside to play MLB? Bad move there.

Skorp: I agree with your take here. I think a number of people might not just grasp what Emmitt Smith will mean to this team. Not just in yards gained but in credability, making us more of a place that a FA will join, people in the seat, and bringing an attitude to the team. People are just looking at a 33 year old RB but his value goes way beyond that. He is sort of like adding Michael Jordon to your team. I think we can move up on your list as we will make further additions.

EXACTLY!!!! I don't see why some of these sportswriters would bash the Cards for this move. Yes, it may put quite a bit more fanny's in the bleachers, but that will just be a plus to all the other things you have mentioned!!!! BTW, 10-6 in 2003!!!!!

I also think that people don't grasp what Emmitt Smith will mean to this team, but in the other direction. A lot of fans are overestimating the value of Smith right now to the team.

I have no idea why people think that ARI is going to be a prime FA destination simply because an old vet, who happens to have a record, came into town. Look at the Raiders. Did Rosie Colvin (the consensus best player in Free Agency, if not DB) want to be a Raider just because they got Jerry Rice (who's always been twice the player Emmitt is), along with treating all of their players, current and former, very well? Hell no. This is not the Packers signing Reggie White in his prime.

Emmitt's signing gives some Cards fans and apparently the entire front office (although I haven't heard any glowing reviews on the acquision coming from the O-Coordinator's office, mysteriously) a great, big, warm fuzzy, and put the Cards in some headlines. It has not put Vonnie Holliday's signature on the dotted line, or has Junior Seau quitting on his prusuit of the Fins to come here.

You're example is Michael Jordan, but that's not really the case. Michael was the single most clutch player in NBA history, possibly sports history. If you were playing an all-time pickup game, he'd be the first person taken. If I wanted to play one game with any player in NFL history, Emmitt would not make the depth chart at the RB position.

What you're right on with the Michael Jordan comparison is that Michael Jordan with the Wiz hasn't made that team a contender, nor attracted any marquee talent into D.C. Neither will having Emmitt in the Valley.

It might sell some tickets, though.

Oh, and stop drinking the Cardinal Kool-Aid. We're not going 10-6.

I thought Spikes was an outside linebacker?
