I watched FSU vs. NC State last night in order to get a better feel for Buster Davis.
There wasn't a lot of highlight reel stuff on Buster, but here are a few things that caught my eye:
1. It looked as though he was calling the defensive signals from the MLB or ILB position.
2. He's one of those guys who likes to mix it up and stick his face in there.
3. Sometimes it seemed as though he'd move left and the play would go right. It was hard to determine whether (a) he was playing within the system and his assignment was to "move left" or (b) he was taking too many false first steps. (My guess is that, in most cases, it was the former).
4. There was one inside play, however, when Buster ran around his block; which in turn took him out of the RB's running lane resulting in a long gain.
5. Buster seemed to get nice deep drops when the situation called for it. He did a nice job of breaking up a potential TD pass at the back of the end zone.
Conclusion - Buster likes to hit. Buster can cover. Buster is smart. Buster is quick and instinctive. But Buster is far from being a finished product and still has room to improve technique-wise. (Note - I didn't mention his height because when you watch him play, you don't even think about it - it seems to be pretty much a non-factor).
