It is just mind numbing to try and understand the lofty expectations of these new owners. Butch Davis is 24 -35 with an expansion team. These are not the original Cleveland Browns. Those Browns play in Baltimore. The guy takes the team to the playoffs 2 years ago. This team is decimated by injuries and he gets fired. Now Nick Saban will come in and get a free pass in a new year with everyone healthy and he will be the genius. Oh by the way, how does Carmen Policy get a free pass in this one? This is the same guy who left the 49ers in the mess it is now in. Keep the coach. Fire the owner. The NFL is nuts.

Browns head coach Butch Davis resigns

By TOM WITHERS
AP Sports Writer

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Cleveland Browns head coach Butch Davis resigned on Tuesday, leaving a last-place team with five games remaining in a season going nowhere.

The Browns (3-8) lost their fifth straight game on Sunday, 58-48 at Cincinnati, and are in fourth place in the AFC North. The team went to the playoffs just once in Davis' nearly four seasons as head coach.

Davis, who went 24-36 in his three-plus seasons, left with three years remaining on a contract worth approximately $12 million.

Browns spokeswoman Lisa Levine said team president John Collins will have 2 p.m. EST news conference at their headquarters in Berea.

Either offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie or defensive coordinator Dave Campo is expected to take over as interim coach for the Browns, who host the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots on Sunday.

Pressure had been mounting on Davis for weeks as the Browns' season crumbled with a score of injuries to key players and heartbreaking losses.

Amid speculation last week that Davis was about to be fired, Browns president John Collins said the 52-year-old Davis, who joined the Browns in 2001, would remain coach for the remainder of the year - unless he resigned.

Davis, who helped restore the University of Miami's program before joining the Browns, will likely be a candidate for the job opening at Florida.

The rumor had been all over the airways for over a week, now; so it comes as no surprise.

I get the feeling that, while losing certainly hasn't helped, it was the other side-show stuff going on in Cleveland that convinced ownership that Butch had lost his team and that a move had to be made right now.

Just to squash the rumor Nick Saban will not take this job...Has stated all season he has no desire to coach in the N.F.L. again....Something to do with all the prima donnas there...He's too happy at L.S.U. to leave

One of the main reasons Buych was fired, besides his record, is because he lost control of the team.By that i mean there was someone spouting off every week in the paper with complaints and so forth. Now you know why coaches like Green try to control their players.Nothing good come from malcontents going to the media.

Carmen Policy resigned (and subsequently had his share of the team bought out by Al Lerner's son...who now owns the entire team) at least a year ago to go open a winery in the Napa Valley. So he's not really "getting a free pass on this one."

I see. So one by one the Lerner's are getting rid of the old. Brutal business.

Totally agree with this. Problems and issues stay within the team. The press may not like it but the players do. (untill they get cut! :D )
