Computer spec illiterate looking to get new desktop after 7 years. Needs are photo & video storing and editing and the occasional log in to Quicken to balance the checkbook.

Any guidance on the most important spec's would be greatly appreciated!

Why not just get a notebook? They can do everything you ask and don't take up as much space and is portable?

I like cnet.com for reviews.

Sure of course there are a couple of ads. ASFN has ads too.

If you have a better suggestion for notebook reviews that would be more appreciated than a panning.

Thanks...I believe a lap top it is.

There are a lot of good deals out there on laptops and I'm sure you can find a good one for a good price.

Interesting thread, though, because I am shopping for a desktop myself right now. My mom's computer needs to be replaced, so I just need a simple desktop to plug into the existing monitor, printer, etc. HP has some beginning at $299, so I will probably get one of those. Pretty crazy to think how much these things used to cost.

I bought my mom a new desktop for her birthday. Paid 269 with free shipping. Granted, it's not a world beater, but it had XP (there's no way my mom could have done Vista) and was just fine for her needs (internet, some online card games)

Amazon shows it as being unavailable, but they have the newer model of it that has Windows 7 for 299

What he said, desktops are so yesterday.

That depends. You can get a desktop with a lot more power, memory and bells and whistles for a lot less money than with a laptop.

If you don't need the mobility I'd go with a desktop every time.
