Mar. 28—MORGANTOWN — BYU erased a 4-0 deficit, Crew McChesney drove in four runs and the Cougars raced past WVU on Thursday night, 14-5, in the opening game of a three-game series.

WVU (20-4, 2-3 Big 12) looked like it was cruising inside Miller Park in Provo, Utah after taking a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

All four runs came with two outs in the inning, with Chase Swain scoring two on a base hit and Brodie Kresser scoring two more with a double.

BOX SCORE The Mountaineers didn't score again until adding a meaningless run in the ninth inning when Ben Lumsden doubled home Spencer Barnett.

The game did mark the return of Logan Sauve, who had missed the last two games with shoulder soreness. Sauve was 0 for 3, but reached base in the second inning after getting hit by a pitch.

BYU (14-9, 4-3) took control of the game in the fifth inning.

The Cougars scored six runs for an 8-4 lead, and needed only three hits to do it. WVU used four pitchers just to get out of the inning.

Griffin Kirn, WVU's starter, was taken out after Ryder Robinson reached on an error, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Luke Anderson's base hit.

In came Luke Lyman for the Mountaineers, who walked one and then hit another with a pitch.

WVU reliever Benjamin Hudson picked up two outs in the inning, but also allowed a hit, two walks and three runs.

Reese Bassinger finished out the inning forcing a foul out.

BYU's bullpen was the difference. Three Cougars relievers scattered four hits and one run over 4 2 /3 innings.

Meanwhile, six WVU relievers combined to go five innings, while giving up nine hits, 10 runs and four walks.

WVU had eight hits with no player getting more than one. Kyle West had a double for the Mountaineers, who left nine runners stranded on base.

Lyman took the loss for WVU, while BYU reliever Justis Reiser (3-0), picked up the win. He went 1 2 /3 innings and gave up one hit and no runs.
