4 year extension through 2013 apparently. The interesting thing to come out of it is the revelation that the Falcons actually talked to Tedford about their job and he said he told them he wasn't interested. He took that to his AD and said I want to stay at Cal, lots happening(renovations planned) and I want job security. Said he realizes Cal can't compete with NFL money but that's not all he wanted and Cal made the commitment to him.

Translation, he got more money from Cal, they haven't said how much. Interestingly the claim is he'd have gotten 3-4 million from an NFL team, not
just the Falcons. So maybe people were correct that Petrino's contract was high because they had to get him to leave college?

Great news for Cal, it's been well known for several years that teams in the Pac 10 recruit against each other by saying "well if you go to USC Carroll will leave, if you go to Cal, Tedford will leave." So now Cal can do that against USC without fear of retribution.

:D

Russ-

Whats the deal, are you a Cal fan or UCLA fan? It seems it would be tough to be a fan of both if even if in different sports

Smart move by Tedford. More and more coaches are opting for college jobs rather than the meat-grinding insecurity of NFL jobs.

I have a split personality.

I'm a UCLA fan in hoops, in football over the years I became a Cal fan. I follow UCLA, but not nearly as closely in football as in hoops.

I became a sports fan in 75, that year my teams were the Warriors(NBA champs), UCLA(NCAA champs, Wooden's last year), and the Cardinals(playoffs). In a sense I blame myself because UCLA went another 20 years before winning again, the Warriors can't even make the playoffs let alone win, and the Cards didn't make the playoffs again until 98.

Cal should have signed Tedford to a 10-year extension like Louisville did with Petrino. Then they would be assured of keeping Tedford in Berkeley. :D

Note the deal now runs through 2013 which means his current deal already ran through 2009. So his saying he wanted job security was a nice way of saying I wanted more money.

Russ,

Most Cal fans I know dislike UCLA for "stealing" the mascot, colors, and probably other things. Any opinions on that?

The Bears mascot, Oskie, is terrifying in a scared of clowns as a kid kind of way. UCLA's bear is cute and cuddly.

Don't look now but rumor has it Tedford's extension has a clause in it that if Cal doesn't build the new sports complex, he can get out without a buyout.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2747159

And an Alameda judge just barred them from building the complex for environmental and seismic reasons. This is just the beginning of a long process for sure but Cal fans just got a bit nervous because if this building doesn't happen, they probably lose Tedford.

Apparently the new contract has a 300k buyout, but it's not signed off on yet by the board of regents. The old contract the buyout is 150K. Tedford hasn't said a thing but people are afraid he may now buyout the contract and take another job since he's stressed how critical the new facility is for Cal to be able to recruit and stay competitive.

Would suck for Cal if he left.
