I can't remember who it was debating with me last year about Cal running the spread offense and that's why JJ Arrington's stats were so good his senior year. My take then was Cal did NOT run the spread, and now I can finally prove it.

The new quarterback will also have to absorb some new plays; Tedford is planning to integrate a spread offense into his game plans. And there are questions about the offensive line -- the Golden Bears lost three starters to the NFL in the off-season. The new center and the quarterback will have to adjust to the shotgun snap -- always an adventure.

The story locally so far is they're only adding the spread to Tedford's existing offense to give them a different look. My guess is Tedford wants to see if it can help Ayoob who didn't play in a pro set much in JC. Right now Longshore is considered the starter, he started the first game last year before getting hurt and giving way to Ayoob, he's back healthy now.

Should be interesting to see what if any effect it has on the run game with Marshawn Lynch, 3 new starters on the OL and one of the returning starters, Andrew Cameron, actually retired this offseason after knee surgery but his knee came back so well he decided to play again so the jury is still out on him.

It's a gimmick O, that will gain some yards, but might struggle in the red zone...Put that with their old O, and Cal is twice as hard to stop...I'm glad ASU is facing them early in the season, because that could be a tough O to stop with their already great O!
