according to Andrew Brandt on twitter:

Due to the new CBA, frnachise tag calculation is now the top 5 saleries of prior 5 years rather than just the prior year. Lower numbers for tag receipiants (sp?).

increases our chances of tagging Campbell if we can't extend him.

seriously... just pay the guy. the idea that the only way we can keep ANY player who we actually want that hits FA is the franchise tag speaks volumes about how this organization is run.

So to take it from the posts on this thread, the Cards have already decided to tag CC?

The franchise tag is just an option, we all know that Rod Graves is working diligently behind the scene to quickly get this done:D

Hey, Mr B has to have his ice cream before he pays anyone ;)

Kent Somers was on Bickley and MJ yesterday afternoon and said that to his knowledge there are no negotiations going on for extensions to players. He added the caveat that Campbell's agent, Ben Dogra, isn't a guy who negotiates through the media at all.

I put a tweet out to Brandt to provide the rest of the Franchise numbers. His article on the NFP (which was informative) only gave the numbers for QBs, RBs, and TEs. Maybe he's going to game it out over the next couple of months, but that's pretty crappy.

Imagine this D without CC... The guy has played in 55/56 games in his 4 year career and is going into his prime. I would be shocked and sick if we didn't get him locked up. I hope they don't think the emergence of David Carter is a reason NOT to do this. We can give him 5-6M right now for some security before he tests the market.

That's what Fitz's agent does to us each time and yet it still seems worth it...

Any guesses as to what CC's numbers would look like....and I agree, pay the man. It wiould buy a tiny bit of "goodwill" in an otherwise terrible year so far.

yes, I will pay anything to Campbell's car salesman when the car you own is a clunker and every time you try to get from point A to point B you stay at 'A'nemic and 'A'ggravated and can't 'B'eat anyone lol

Re-signing CC needs to happen in the next month. After being credited with another .5 sack today for last week's game, he now leads all 3-4 DEs in sacks for the season. That's a pretty important skill for a team severely lacking in pass rush options. I wonder if Dockett's contract is complicating matters. Campbell has outplayed Dockett all year, but paying the two similar salaries would put a lot of money into a position that traditionally comes fairly cheap.

I also put a lot of the blame for these lack of extensions on Whis. Graves had no problem negotiating with players mid-season when Denny was here. In 2004, we extended Troy Hambrick, Nathan Hodel, Peppi Zelner and Ifeanyl Ohalete on the same day. The results of those signings obviously weren't great, but the effort was there. The mid-season extensions for Dockett and Hayes handled by Graves/Denny were much bigger successes. I can't remember a single mid-season extension since Whis has been in town. Hopefully, CC will be the first.
