The big news for the Arizona Cardinals and the NFL on Tuesday was the announcement that veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell agreed to a one-year contract to return to Arizona and play for the team that drafted him.

Campbell revealed why he chose to come back to the Cardinals eight years after he left in free agency.

He posted on his Instagram account the following:

"What a story it would be! Started my career with a bang. Now it’s time to finish it with a bang back home where it first began!"

It sounds like he wants to play one more season before retiring.

Campbell is still a productive player. Last season in his one year with the Miami Dolphins, he played in and started all 17 games, playing 615 defensive snaps. He had 52 total tackles, five sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hits, five tipped passes and a forced fumble. His five sacks matches the Cardinals' high in 2024, as Zaven Collins led the team with five sacks.

Campbell is another veteran in the defensive line room that already had Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols from last season and added Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency.

What is the bang he started his career with that he wants to repeat? Surely it was making it to the Super Bowl, which he did with the Cardinals as a rookie. It would be an amazing end to his career if he could reach it again this coming season.

It would be a great end for a great player.
