Calais Campbell...

I am really beginning to wonder if Campbell will ever realize his potential. I am not sure if it is poor coaching or what, but he just isn't developing. One of the biggest flaws in his game that I see is his constant use of the swim move. Both Warren Sapp and Michael Strahan have both stated that the swim move is terrible, and that all it does is make it easier for offensive linemen to push you around. Basically, it forces you into a bad leverage position, and as we all know, on the line, low man wins. Being tall, this puts Campbell at an even greater disadvantage. Campbell used this move 2 or 3 times in the game against the Raiders and I think we winded up on his ass every time. I am not sure if the Cardinals defensive line coach is just failing to do his job or if Campbell isn't listening, but if he can't get this fixed, I wouldn't extend him long term.

For the most part, I was impressed by Dan Williams last year and I thought Toler was better than expected but on the whole, they all stunk.

Agree with Williams and Toler, and would add Washington - he had a very respectable rookie season.
Paris Lenon also played better than anticipated (though still not good enough).

I heard an interview with C. Campbell and he said that it(swim) was his best/favorite move.

Sometimes i think hes just not strong enough. When you see him hes really not that cut. All his weight is in his height. I saw him on mill ave one night and he is definitley more tall than big. When you think of defensive ends you think of tanks..

Maybe itll help him if hes standing up more in hortons D?

His game has dropped off a ton! He was a monster 2 years ago.
He is happy being a decent player I am convinced. He has lost a ton of strength and no longer gets any push at the LOS.
I'm sad to see his talents wasted, but that's what it is.

Anyone seeing it different is just lying to themselves.

Pure waste of talent right now.

What I noticed about Campbell, Thurs. night was (a) he was in the thick of just about every battle at the POA and (b) he (rather than DDock or D Williams) was double-teamed a lot.

(Note - It's hard to execute a swim move vs. 2 guys who are trying to crush you nut-cracker style).

Never felt that the kid had the urgency to be great. He has always felt like a guy I wanted to hang out with, but not a guy that will tackle your mother for the football.

Some guys have all the natural ability in the world but are just to aloof to be great I guess.

Registered just to post in this thread - Calais is without question the least appreciated member of our defense. Not only did he lead our team in sacks last year while missing time with an injury AND being forced to split time with Branch (take the number of snaps Dockett played last year, divide it by the number Campbell played and then multiply that number by Campbell's sacks - interesting, huh?) he also is going to be one of the most highly coveted free agents going into next season. The same veteran players called out in the original post (like Strahan) cannot say enough about Campbell's game not to mention that everyone I know who's ever met the guy says he is without question one of the nicest, most respectful young men that they've ever met.

Go back and watch the Raider game - Calais consistently beats the guy in front of him (in one notable instance, using the same spin move derided in this thread) and at the end of the day, if this team and us fans cannot start to show this guy some love, mark my words, someone else will. Campbell is going to have a HUGE season this year - my over/under is 10 sacks - and bookmark this thread if you disagree. Not trying to be confrontational, but I've just always been surprised by the lack of attention given to #93.

Three different DC's in 3 years. Give him some time under our new DC the kid will really develop under him.

CC is part of the solution, not the problem.

CC has a bright future....and the swim move is the staple of all successful DE's...but ya have to have a couple more to compliment it, a swim alone makes you a one trick pony...a strong bull rush, and a spin, and any DE will make it to the QB every so often. The trick with the swim is mostly the footwork, if done properly the only option the OT has is to hold you. Generally you should start with a bull rush then hit them with the swim...but if your feet are not in the right place you get no leverage...
CC will be fine, he swims and has a decent bull rush....for a guy 6'8".....I for one would like to see him bulk up about 15 or 20 pounds, mostly on the upper body....taller guys need that upper body strength.

He's up to 300 lbs this year.

I'm with you, but you can't deny the fact that the guy gets blown off the ball way too many times. Go back and watch that same tape you are referencing and watch him get too high a couple times and get dismantled. I think the guy can and will me a monster if he can get maintain leverage.

I know, but every time he is interviewed that's what he says he needs to work on the most. The tape shows that. I would hope not to see that, but it was like back to back plays.
