With five games to go in the regular season, the Calgary Flames announced that 2024 ninth-overall pick Zayne Parekh will join the team in Anaheim tonight. The move by Calgary comes just days after Parekh and the Saginaw Spirit were eliminated in the first round of the OHL Playoffs.
For the past two seasons, Parekh has led all CHL defenders in scoring. During his draft year, he scored 96 points in 66 games and was subsequently named CHL defenseman of the year.
This year, he became the tenth defender in OHL history to surpass 100 points in a single season by scoring 107 points in 61 games. His 107-point season is the sixth-highest point total ever registered by an OHL defender in a single season.
He's a proven offensive dynamo with an elite shot and incredible edges. He draws so much attention in the offensive zone that his teammates are often left more open than they should be.
The Flames have struggled offensively relative to the teams around them in the standings, scoring only 203 goals so far this season. That is the third lowest total in the Western Conference, with only Nashville (192) and San Jose (198) scoring fewer.

The Flames currently sit four points behind the Minnesota Wild, who hold the final wild-card spot. Calgary does have a game in hand on Minnesota. If Calgary can stay in the race, the two teams will face off in what could be a pivotal matchup this Friday in Calgary.
