Some of you are going to come in here and tell me I am a sore loser and that I should just accept the loss against the Pistons. I do know that the Suns had missed opportunities, but this isn’t what the thread is about…it’s about the officiating.

What other league do you know that referees can alter an outcome of a game? None, it is only the NBA.

So can anything be done to improve officiating in the NBA?

Do they need to implement replay for controversial calls? Do they need to do like the NFL and have the ability for a coach to challenge a foul? Do they have to stick more old white guys out there on the court? What has to be done?

This is a legit question, and I am asking you, the fans….

A lot of star pampering is done in this league, as well as “making up” for a bad foul later in the game. What about a blatant foul that is let go because it’s in the weaning moments?

My take, you call a type of foul on one team, it’s only fair you do the same for the other team. There may not be bias officials out there, but for years it has looked like it.

Hell, we had an official go rogue on us and determine outcomes and spreads…who is to say no other ref is going that?

Jesus christ dude, stop posting stupid, pointless threads. This thread is just asking people to come in here and complain after every game we lose. What's the point of that? Do we not have enough of that in the game threads?

The refs in the NBA have the hardest job of any officials in the league. Nothing can be done to improve officiating because it is incredibly hard to do. That's an obvious answer.

Football officials can have a huge impact on a game as there are many calls that aren't reviewable. They can do a whole bunch of things to ruin a game's ending. Ask Raiders fans how they feel about that.

Baseball can be hugely altered by officiating. Balls, strikes, fair, foul, safe, out, and everything else is baseball is tough to call.

Also, i don't know where you get the idea that in the NFL you can challenge a penalty (same as a foul in basketball). You can't.

Let the Taliban manage the referees. Whoever makes a bad call gets hanged or stoned to their deaths.

The refs are human..the NBA requires numerous calls to be made. There are a lot of fouls in the NBA. Instant replay would slow down the game way too much considering the amount of calls.

Nothing can be done...thanks for playing (no calls).

Its very hard for me to accept that refs making mistakes is inevitable.

Tonight's game was intense, had its ups and down, and was fought very hard by both teams. To see refs change the direction of that intense competition was very disappointing. The fact that any analysis, audit, or review of refs by the NBA is private and not disclosed only compounds the issue. It is widely accepted that the NBA has the worst quality officiating out of any major US sport.

I think if refs had the mindset of keeping within the spirit of each individual game it would make shoddy officiating a much easier pill to swallow. But when shoddy officiating is combined with highly protested, arbitrary and subjective game altering decisions my blood just starts to boil, because it makes zero sense.

Now that I've calmed down. I will say the better team will always find a way to win. I don't think that the refs won the Pistons the game. They certainly altered the game to some extent however, looking back, the Suns could have still won that game. There were plenty of other excuses (though the bad calls are pretty strong excuses for this game) that can be looked at such as the offensive plays down the stretch, some were just poor decision making as a team in the finals minutes of the 4th/OT.

-The Bell bank shot runner
- Amare's fade-aways
- Clock Management in general

Those will be looked at as their excuses, otherwise the coaching staff shouldn't even watch the tape from this game.

We are right there, no doubt. Minor things still need to be adjusted. Bell just came back, if there's no more dramatic injuries up into the playoffs, then I feel very confident that the Suns can consistently perform well in April and so on.

We get it, you don't agree that the officiating is bad in the NBA. If you don't want to read a thread, DON'T CLICK IT. You complain about people posting the same thing over and over again when you're just as guilty as they are with your constant complaints about other people's posts. Add something substantial to the discussion, or don't post. If it becomes a problem, put some trust in Chris and the other mods who are here to take care of it.

i agree that the officiating is a problem. i do not agree that it was the sole reason for our loss tonight, i do not agree that we should sulk about a game like this for a week, and, most of all, i do believe that we have to overcome these things if we are to be proven champions....especially when the opponent is a potential finals match up and especially when they are short-handed.

Andrew.. Did you see the UCLA/A&M Finale?

Texas A&M is down 2 points and they go for the winning shot and this happens;

You must be registered for see images

This was ruled a clean block and no foul was called. Furthermore, ESPN and Fox Sports spent a large amount of time stroking the c of UCLA and "their defense" after this game.

Bad calls in BASKETBALL that cannot be overturned or corrected are a problem in general imo.

One, people have said it is a factor in our loss, but most everyone is conceding that we should have done better. Two, we lost TONIGHT, not a week ago, so I'm not sure why you think people have been complaining about this for a week. And third, I'm sure everyone would agree with you about overcoming these things. However, you never post and talk about that, you just post about how you hate reading everybody else's posts.

Tonight was just such a close hard fought game that bad and on bad and inconsistant call at the wrong time can kill your chances. That's what happen, but we could not stop Chompers (Chauncey) without fouling him. The game is over, I really won't blame the refs on this one. Though Shaq get's treated unfairly. So does Nash. Nash is little, but rarely gets called for fouls anymore when he drives. Shaq gets hung on and hit.. sometimes with absolutely no call at all.

Edit - The same happens to all the great players. They don't want to call TOO MANY fouls so they just let stuff go. Unless your Kobe and your in LA and you need to score 81 points. lol.

i wasn't saying that they have whined about it for a week, i was saying that a week from now if/when we lose another game, that will be the first thing people say. it will probably go something along the lines of "Oh this is just like last week when we the refs robbed us of a game with the pistons". a lot of people seem to be saying that this game was stolen, robbed, or cheated away from us. That is essentially the same as saying that we were beaten by the refs alone, which is not the case. I'm not sure everyone would agree about overcoming these things. Is it just me, or are people making threads about "where getting screwed on the road happens", "what can be done to improve officiating?", and the likes? I've seen multiple posts saying that the calls in the playoffs will be different so we don't have to worry. So rather than overcoming these things and learning to play through them, we should just hope the refs call stuff our way in the post season? that's absurd.

I do, but not for the reason you think.

The team shouldn't sulk, because it won't help. They are upset, they have a right to be, but they can't let it effect them past tonight. It sucks, but it's part of the game, it's not the end of the world, it didn't make or break the season, there is no reason to hold on to it.

Suns need to let it go and get ready for the Celtics. That's all they can really do.

sure.
Pistons are a very good team that isn't dirty like the spurs, but that doesn't change the fact that this was our win and the refs handed them it.

Hopefully if we run into each other in the finals this garbage doesn't happen again.

This officiating sucks!!!!!!thats the game.....

Refs are paid off, that was a charge...

2 bad calls no charge for nash and a bs on shaq. It is official. We got robbed.

refs can suck my dick.

they ruined a perfectly entertaining game.

im beside myself. the officials have cost us another one

omfg that is such a charge on billups these refs are the wost i've seen

billups is good,
but the refs are better

how the hell is that foul he didn't touch him bias refs bs losers

Congrats, pistons. Refs won you the game. Terrible.

At least I am happy we can beat the pistons, because this wasn't a real win for the pistons, not by a long stretch when they got the benefit of 3 calls which were each in their own game deciding.

the refs robbed us of a great game

got enough?

To answer the original question, yes, of course. Replay would help a lot. An extra ref watching the video feed would fix at least 90% of bad calls. But even a "coach's challenge" replay would have been enough to overturn the Nash foul.

Referees make mistakes, because they aren't sure of what the call should be, but they are forced to make a call anyway. So they make a split second decision that is based on what they think was more likely to have happened rather than what actually happened. Without the benefit of instant replay, the system is often no more reliable than flipping a coin. And when it comes down to luck, well, let's just say that's not our forte.

This is why I worry during close games. I am more worried about bad calls than the team making mistakes. And I am worried about the playoffs too, because the last two years we've lost two games due to officiating errors. Yes, a team can overcome, but there is a limit to how much a team can overcome. If you have two teams that are both playing at the same level that neither can establish a significant lead in the game, then one or two bad calls down the stretch is all it takes to give one team the advantage they needed to pull away.

- Tell officials to stop reffing based on reputation (i.e. Pistons and Spurs have a reputation for being "physical" therefore they get away with more fouls)

- Stop the favoring of superstars

- If someone has proven that they can't do their job (ie Violet Palmer has been rated as a bottom 5 official since she has been hired) then find a replacement

- Call traveling more than once a game

Of course, even when Nash does have established position outside the circle and Chompers barrels into him in crunch time, the refs call the charge a block and give the Pistons a three-point play.

Ugh. That one hurt.
