I have to wonder what their offseason plans are. Do they go for it one more time or do they unload and reload

There's still a lot of time left in the season - they defintely have a shot if their bats come alive and you know that Fins and Gonzo will gon at least one more streak - they always have their streaks in the first half AND second half - we'll see if that carries over because this pitching staff is amongst the best in the league - more home games good - less road games better - lots of games against really bad teams - even better. Bring on the rest of the season and please no more ridiculous droughts like the last 15 games.

They can and they will. We are only 5 out of the WC - plenty of time to make up that ground.

I felt "maybe" 2 weeks ago, now definately not. Mondesi is a slug with baggage. There is more people bitching about Mark Grace on this board then asking what is up with the rest of our "hitters"! The team in general seems to be in a funk. (I didn't see last nites game a win). Lets start thinking next year or two at least if they keep hitting like they have since the break. Just my "stupid" opinion!

The reason that a lot of us are upset with Grace right now is that he is the worst of our "hitters"(starters or bench)!! Nobody on the ballclub has been spared from the fans' wrath this season - it all comes down to production, and Grace simply isn't producing right now. I agree the same thing could be said about a number of players right now, but Graces' roster spot could be used for Overbay, Hammock, or even Chad Tracy, and merely keeping him around for "veteran presence" is hurting the ballclub.

It's not like he will be kicked to the curb - Jerry C. will keep him in some capacity with the team as long as Grace wants to be here.

I think it really depends on the offense..their pitching has proved to be real well..If their offense starts hitting then they can win the Wildcard..

I think we will know in the next week or so. They have a stretch of home games and they need to get it going right now to have a chance.

The win last night was a good start if not particularly confidence inspiring.

I say yes but I am an optimist. :)

agreed - if they can get out of the next two weeks and shave 2-3 games off the lead - they will be in good shape.

They can still win the Wildcard, and the popular thinking is that they would be the team to beat in the playoffs. I disagree, because of two things: their offense and Bob Brenly. Johnson and Schilling weren't enough to carry the D-Backs thru last years playoffs and I don't see that happening again this year. What does happen w/ this team is the lack of offense makes every Brenly move that much more important and he is consistently screwing up at every turn. In my opinion, we'd see just more of the same in the playoffs and another 1st round exit.

But now we are more than Johnson/Schilling pitching - with Webb, Batista and the bullpen, we will be tough to beat.
I don't think the dry spell the offense is indicitive of what the team really is capable of - they are not a great offensive team, but not as horrible as they were since the all-star break.

In answering SunCityCarl, I forgot to reply to the actual thread topic...

I'm still hopeful, but not altogether optimistic about our chances for the playoffs; if we didn't play like crap against the Gnats, Marlins & Cubs, I would feel a lot better about our situation. I wish we could get back the spark that the BabyBacks provided before the All-Star Break - the current club just doesn't look very enthusiastic, although losing & a long road trip might have a lot to do with it.

BTW, has anybody noticed a change in Johnson's delivery? It looks like the knee problem has taken away some of his leg drive, but I could be wrong.

I went to Tuesday's game and it appears that RJ has slowed down some and is using more off speed pitches. He doesn't appear to throw as many 94+ fastballs.

Just my obserevation.

PS: If the hitting returns and they can score 4 or more runs I think they make the playoffs as the wildcard.
