This is very current. It is also very embarrasing. How on earth are we the worst off team in the NFL when it comes to CAP space. I mean "DEAD LAST". Tampa Bay is $49 million under while we are 13.7 million over. How does this happen? I am totally lost. What am I missing here?

I didn't think they were over anymore, you can find the up to date details here: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/arizona-cardinals/cap-hit/

Fitz, Calais and Kolb make up $40mil in cap space...

All NFL teams have to be at or under the cap at the beginning of each calendar year, which this year was March 13. I don't believe these numbers are accurate. If a team is over they can receive different penalties such as forfeiture of draft picks and others. The current cap estimate for the This year is 120.6 million and could go up to 123 million. I have a hard time believing the NFL is allowing us to sign free agents and we even bothered with Peyton Manning if this was such a dire situation. Sometimes you have to stop listening to the talking heads that are just putting out sports entertainment and use some common sense.

Dude time to get a grip.

I don't trust these numbers either, but yours are from the 13th these numbers are from the 16th. Point is chill out and relax everything's going to be okay. Somehow, in three days he has us from close to 14 million over to a 1/2 million under. Like I said, don't trust sports entertainment news journalism they go day by day and don't know what the heck is around the corner.

The constant in both is that we have the worst cap situation in the league. :(

If you want to believe them. John Clayton had us around 3 million under the cap and that was before we cut and re-signed Levi Brown. That move saved us money right there. In three days the number changed around 14 millon and we are now 4 days past that date are we 14 million under now? I guess I haven't been a Cardinals fan as long as some of you, I don't go to many years prior to University of Phoenix Stadium. I don't think the sky is falling and I certainly don't trust today's sports news, entertainment.

PS. We cut Hadnot and Stuckey on the 19th that gave us 3 millon more acording to Darren Urban so around and around we go what number we are at no one knows.

Simple. They use roster bonuses, rather that signing bonuses. This eats up the remaining cap, rather than spreading it over the life of the contract.

Fitz is getting 15mill THIS year in roster bonuses. It would only count about 2 mill on this years cap if it was spread over the contract.

Thats IMO 13mill the card don't have to spend this year on other players. They pay it, to save it on the back end.

This still leaves Denver with a $440 million under the CAP while we are at $449 thousand under. That is an enormous difference. How does this happen. Aside from that Denver is a pretty good team. San Francisco who was 13-3 last year is $23.5 mil under. Are these teams that just better manage their CAP? Are we doing something wrong? Is Matt Leinart part of this? I think each team has to spend around 90% of their CAP by the new league agreement. Does that start this year or next. I would expect the Bidwills to hold back some of this if we operated as usual.

Holy crap man I just don't get it. The Cards are one of the highest in player expenditure and have been for years yet they leave a few million on the cap and they get **** on for it. Now they are over the cap and have to make some moves to get barely under and GUESS WHAT?? They get **** on for it!!!

It is unfracking real the bi-polarism of cards fans. JUST WOW!

I'm sorry, but in my opinion, you're overreacting. You already know by reading this short thread we saved another 3 million by cutting another couple of players. The fact you're stuck on the 449,000 and didn't make any attempt to add the 3 million that we saved yesterday shows me you just want to whine and complain. I'm sorry but the Cardinals for me isn't about that. You act as if we were 2 win 14 last season. You do realize we had a new defensive coordinator and a new quarterback and a lot of young talent on the field? This team still managed a 500 season with the God awful quarterback performance we witnessed last season. If that doesn't say we have some talent in other places I don't know, what does. We shouldn't bury our heads in the sand and drink the Kool-Aid but the way I look at it we are a decent quarterback performance from being a playoff team. I'm thankful were at the top of that list instead of the bottom. I hope you weren't the guy calling the organization cheap back in the old days. I don't think this team is as bad or it is in as bad of a situation as you think. Anyways don't let me stop you I'm, just not interested in joining in.

This is incorrect. The total cap is around $120 million.

Here's a quick question for you: How many players do the Broncos have under contract?

That number will tell why they are so under the CAP!

(The Cards have 55)

Well, to be fair, the Cards sign a lot of stupid FA contracts and use a few of these to purposefully eat up cap space. Yeah, John is pretty much going off the deep end, but we haven't been spending our money wisely.

Other than Bradley, who are we over spending on?

Kolb is a QB their all over paid. But they still used 7 mill on this years roster bonus, it could of been only about 1.5 this year if structured better.

Between Fitz and Kolb we could of had another what 18 mill to spend on improving this team. If they structured that way.

Why didn't They give us plenty of cap room to improve? A: the average fan see's the cap room and thinks there spending all they can. B: That's 18 mill they saved by not spending it on more players.

I'm no capologist, but to me it seems the less upfront $$ the better is a business policy for AZ. If they structure contracts as signing bonuses and divide them among the years of the.contract, we gain cap space now, but that creates more contracts for additional players and more upfront signing bonuses for the new guys as well. Hence, AZ keeps their $$ gaining interest for 12-24 month, depending on the duration of new contracts.

Same old hat Cards. The truly competitive owners pay more upfront $$ than AZ has historically.

Am I wrong?

A good way to manage your cap is to draft better. Something we suck at imo.

For the people who are screaming "hypocrite" because we are now bemoaning a lack of space when a few years ago we bemoaned how cheap they were:

I just wish we could walk a middle ground between being cheap and being stupid.

Nice lists.

But the only useful info I got (if accurate) is that we were $425K under the cap as of March 16 (5 days ago).

So-o-o a lot's been going on since then - which raises the question: "Were Levi's restructure and Stuckey's & Hadnot's release incorporated in the $425K? Or do we have a bigger cap surplus - & if so, how much?

Just my way of saying that, until we all work from the same set of numbers, a lot of BS will continue to fly around on this & other threads.

So what's the latest number?

You're not making sense. They didn't save any money. It was going to cost them that amount anyway. The only thing they did differently was to write it off all at one time rather than spread it out over several seasons and REALLY wind up in CAP hell. By handling the CAP the way they have been doing, if a situation like Manning comes up, they can restructure and still be able to sign him. Most teams don't have that luxury because they spread all the costs out as long as they can and eventually wind up with a CAP problem.

This is the way successful companies are run. They plan for the future and leave themselves an out in case of an unforseen problem. It's a conservative approach designed to keep you from winding up like our federal government.

Yes. You need to understand the difference between when the money actually goes out (cash) and when it is charged to the CAP (accural). These are two different and distinct items. The roster bonus gets charged out immediately while the signing bonus can be charged over the life of the contract. In both instances, the player receives the money up front. The only difference is in how they charge to the the CAP. So no, they aren't getting interest on the money as it has been paid out to the player.

And how can you say the other owners pay more up front when in this very thread, it was noted that the Cards had the highest payroll of any NFL team. You gentlemen need to spend a little more time reading and less time complaining.

Funny too how the same people who are lauding the Cardinals for being big spenders are the same ones who lauded the Cardinals for not being big spenders and getting themselves into cap hell a few years ago.

BEERZ is on target though. The Cards cap situation could easily be rectified. For example Campbell's cap number for 2012 could probably be cut in half with a long term contract. Add in the $18 million, if that # is correct, and suddenly the Cards have $23 million in cap room.

Yes and if it wasn't for Rod Graves negotiating the contracts like that, we wouldn't have that option.

True, but to exercise that option the player or players have to agree to it and to get them to agree they have to be paid to make the changes so it ends up costing the Cards more cap money in the future.

Fans really need to look at my Kool Aid thread to see why being cap strapped right now isn't that big of a problem. The team added a lot of players the last two seasons and had what appears to be two very good drafts 2010 and 2011 so they don't need much in free agency this year.
