WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals can do what it took all 82 games to accomplish last season on Thursday: punch their ticket to the playoffs. It'll take a few circumstances, but none bigger than a win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Here is everything to know before puck drop at 7 p.m. ET at Capital One Arena.
Washington Capitals Line Combinations
The Capitals will stick with what's worked, and the only change will come in goal as Charlie Lindgren gets the start.
Here are the lines:
Alex Ovechkin-Pierre-Luc Dubois-Aliaksei Protas
Connor McMichael-Dylan Strome-Tom Wilson
Andrew Mangiapane-Lars Eller-Taylor Raddysh
Brandon Duhaime-Nic Dowd-Anthony Beauvillier
Rasmus Sandin-John Carlson
Martin Fehervary-Matt Roy
Jakob Chychrun-Trevor van Riemsdyk
Charlie Lindgren
Logan Thompson
Washington Capitals Stats
- Tom Wilson has points in seven of his last eight and hit the 30-goal mark back on Tuesday.
- Aliaksei Protas broke the record for the most points by a Belarusian-born player in a single season by hitting 61 points against Detroit. He has seven points in his last five games overall.
- Dylan Strome has scored the game-opening goal within the first seven minutes of play in three of the last four games.
Washington Capitals Storylines
- Alex Ovechkin will continue his GR8 Chase, as he sits eight goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record. The 39-year-old has 34 goals this season and is on pace to hit 895 on April 13 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
- Pierre-Luc Dubois continues to shine and hit the 60-point mark back on Tuesday. He has six points in his last four games; look for him to keep the momentum going.
- Look out for Connor McMichael as he continues to find his scoring touch down the stretch.
- Keep an eye on Anthony Beauvillier; he's fit in well on that fourth line and looks like he's forming good chemistry with Nic Dowd and Brandon Duhaime.
- It's Women in Hockey Night at Capital One Arena. Shoutout to all the female reporters and staff members behind the scenes, and every other woman in hockey.
Washington Capitals Clinching Scenarios
The Capitals will clinch a spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs if:
1. They defeat the Flyers in regulation AND any result in the Islanders-Canadiens game other than an Islanders' regulation win.
2. They defeat the Flyers in overtime or shootout AND the Islanders lose to the Canadiens in any fashion.
3. They lose to the Flyers in overtime or shootout AND the Blue Jackets lose to the Panthers in any fashion AND the Islanders lose to the Canadiens in regulation.
