Failed experiment (Atlanta): Sensing a further decline in attendance, Hawks management attempted to trim payroll by combining Josh's, Childress and Smith. General Manager Billy Knight was surprised when the two bodies failed to merge into a single legitimate starting small forward: "We're all professional basketball people here. We know quantum physics. This experiment will work if management will just let us do our jobs." Former partner of the Atlanta Spirit LLC Steve Belkin was criticized by Knight for suggesting the team is run by "idiots" who would be "out of their depth in a parking lot puddle." Upon learning that he is, in fact, running the team without interference, Knight refused to answer any further questions or shake anyone's hand.
