Ok, so I have a friend that's moving to Florida this week, and he has some posessions he's taking with and some posessions he's throwing out.

He gave me a box with a huge card collection in it. He says for me to take it and sell it and do what I want with it, because he just doesn't want to deal with it anymore.

Ok, so he brings over this HUGE box and opens it up. There must be 1000+ basketball cards in there, all of them neat and tidy in individual plastic sleeves, categorized and ordered by the year they came out. There's even some in there with portions of the player's game-worn jersey in there, some with pieces of game-used basketball as well. There's a few gold medallions in cases, and some gold/bronze cards as well, once again in mint condition in their sleeves.

So, I think, WOW, this is gonna be worth a fortune... until I look closer, and every last card is of Penny Hardaway.

how's this - i'm a sucker who used to pay for cards and hardaway was my guy. I've got about 100 of his most valuable cards which at one stage were worth a huge amount of money (a first day issue or refractor worth about US$250/300 each from memory, maybe more).

I've still got them and yeah they ain't worth sh*t. The stupidest part? My house was burning down; I'm in my room thinking these gas cannisters were going to explode so i'm kinda in a hurry, and the first thing i see are these hardaway cards - they were the only damn things i took from my bedroom. Forget the wallet, passport, pictures, clothes etc, i take hardaway's (now) worthless b'ball cards.

To say i'm not enamoured with the guy is putting it lightly...

Ha ha, that's great! One of those "I'm not making this up" moments.

I don't mean to pry, but have you ever gotten the impression that your friend is a little "vroom vroom," if you know what I mean? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Years ago I bought a sealed box (Upper Deck) of the first USA Olympic basketball team represented by the NBA pros... Barkley, Bird, Johnson, Ewing, Robinson, Jordan, etc. The whole box consisted of only the NBA pros to represent the U.S. plus one collegiate player (Laetner, I think). Supposedly, if a person bought the right random box, a signed David Robinson card might be inside. I never opened my box to find out.

I thought someday it might accrue in value but the last time I looked for the cards regarding value, I couldn't even find them listed in a reference guide. I'm thinking this Upper Deck Olympic basketball card set doesn't have much value as I cannot find them listed somewhere.

I just wondered if anyone else bought a box of these cards and if they are worth anything. It seemed like a good idea at the time and still does today. I mean this was a true Dream Team.
