Don't get the Monti criticism. This is 100% on Bidwill and Keim. If you aren't willing to pay part of the salary no one is going to take that contract. Probably better to have the salary cap space next year than less space and another third round pick. We already have 3.
Keim has nothing to do with this. Quit making excuses for Monti.

Keim put Monti in a tough spot with this roster. That ultimately impacted how they proceeded with DHOP. Not easy what Keim had Monti walking into.

Is Keim responsible for not resigning Zach Allen OR Byron Murphy? Not signing either was absurd. And that is on Monti/Bidwill. Murphy, in particular, was affordable. Instead, Monti left a glaring hole at cornerback

TBF Keim should have got their deals done a year ago..

Allen clearly had a connection to Vance. Murphy's value in Gannon's system might not be the same.

For contending teams, the cap is not a deterrent
And yet, based on all reports, the Cardinals couldn't find ONE team that would trade for Hopkins because of his cap number.

The draft day trades clearly demonstrate that Monti isn't afraid to wheel and deal. My guess is that teams would have taken Hopkins for a pittance of a draft pick, but also wanted the Cardinals to eat more of the money than they wanted to. No thanks.

And I gather the Cardinals decided to move on from him recently based on interactions with him over the past few weeks.

Not significant enough for someone to pay him 19 million in 2023. Hence, why no one traded for him.

I’m guessing that Hop gets around $19 million in 2023. No one wanted to pay that + a meaningful draft pick. Instead of anything at all, Monti wheeled and dealed and ended up with nothing.

Why not? Hopkins won't be part of the next Cardinals playoff team.

I’m not making the argument that we need to be a poverty franchise in 2023 when we have the fourth-most cap space in the league. You’re asserting that we “needed to” get right with the cap.

Support your argument or just say that you’re fine with losing for as long as Monti is willing to not compete. You don’t need them to give you a reason.

Zach Allen signed a 3 year, $45,750,000 contract with the Denver Broncos, including a $15,000,000 signing bonus, $32,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $15,250,000. In 2023, Allen will earn a base salary of $2,250,000 and a signing bonus of $15,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $6,000,000 and a dead cap value of $32,500,000.

Who on this board thought he was worth that?

Additionally, he rejoins the D-coordinator that gave him his chance.

Byron Murphy signed a 2 year, $17,500,000 contract with the Minnesota Vikings, including a $7,000,000 signing bonus, $12,600,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $8,750,000. In 2023, Murphy will earn a base salary of $1,100,000, a signing bonus of $7,000,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000, while carrying a cap hit of $2,814,699 and a dead cap value of $8,100,000.

Minny has an out after one year. Clearly, they weren't willing to make a long-term commitment, perhaps concerned about his health.

If he gets $19m it will be something structured like the Ravens deal for OBJ.

Money up front and spread for Cap purposes over 3/4 years bringing his 2023 hit in the $5m range.

In a year DHop will be looking for a new home - IMO.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe Hopkins wasn't the only player who didn't want to play when healthy at the end of last year.

I'd have brought both back. With how we're tanking this year, just frontload the Allen deal and it's highly affordable. The main point is we're getting a lot of homer-like "well, we can't blame Monti for..." and, ya know, Monti took this position with all the difficulties it brought. He doesn't get an out for things he does wrong or doesn't get right. Yet for everything that goes south this offseason, he has been Teflon to some. And I suspect that won't go away next year either.

Monti did well in the draft; I don't have to agree with all his picks to give him some credit there. Monti utterly choked on the tampering and it cost us. Monti arguably choked in FA in player retention and in bringing in long-term talent. So far, he's been shaky for me. I'm not willing to grant a first-time GM allowance because we're in the midst of a nasty rebuild and we can't afford mistakes. For my money, we've been set back at least a year in that rebuild.

I don't expect they win many games WITH DeAndre, so what's the point?

Save more money for next year, take their licks this coming season.

Isn’t it possible Murphy and Allen didn’t want to resign?

Do you mean that Gannon and Monti couldn’t sell them on being part of a brighter future than the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings have ahead of them?
This is most likely why he was released. I also think having him off the books in 2024 was a factor. Unless I'm incorrect a trade would have kept him on in dead cap space in 2024.

A trade would have accelerated all of his cap hit into this season.

Having a more entertaining product is the point. One score losses are more interesting than +10 point losses.

If you feel like FAs didn’t want to play with us in a rebuilding season this offseason, why would they sign here after losing 32 games over two seasons?

So the Cardinals haven't technically released him, correct?

Still a possibility he could be traded, a la Hudson and Cooper. Announce a release and leave a chance for a last ditch effort for a trade.

I think Tuesday is the day we know for sure either way.
