And yet, based on all reports, the Cardinals couldn't find ONE team that would trade for Hopkins because of his cap number.

The draft day trades clearly demonstrate that Monti isn't afraid to wheel and deal. My guess is that teams would have taken Hopkins for a pittance of a draft pick, but also wanted the Cardinals to eat more of the money than they wanted to. No thanks.

And I gather the Cardinals decided to move on from him recently based on interactions with him over the past few weeks.

I'd have brought both back. With how we're tanking this year, just frontload the Allen deal and it's highly affordable. The main point is we're getting a lot of homer-like "well, we can't blame Monti for..." and, ya know, Monti took this position with all the difficulties it brought. He doesn't get an out for things he does wrong or doesn't get right. Yet for everything that goes south this offseason, he has been Teflon to some. And I suspect that won't go away next year either.

Monti did well in the draft; I don't have to agree with all his picks to give him some credit there. Monti utterly choked on the tampering and it cost us. Monti arguably choked in FA in player retention and in bringing in long-term talent. So far, he's been shaky for me. I'm not willing to grant a first-time GM allowance because we're in the midst of a nasty rebuild and we can't afford mistakes. For my money, we've been set back at least a year in that rebuild.
