Coaches don't tell guys to play soft, they tell you not to give up the big play. There is a difference in that. CBs are taught to read route combinations and situational tendencies.

Here is an example from today. K Peterson is across from Julio on 3rd and long. He plays soft coverage and gives up the first down afraid of getting beat deep. This, however, is not the smart play. You know they aren't going to run a double move on third down because they know you should not be jumping short routes and a double move at the sticks will take too long. Yes, they could run a vertical route, but that is a more difficult route which takes more time and they don't know if you have help over the top. The play is shorten your cushion but still backpedal agressively to the first down depth. This keeps the WR in front and enables yo uto drive on the ball and tackle the WR short of the marker. Peterson just bailed because he was worried about Julie going 60 yards on him over the top even though it wasn't the situation for it. On 2nd and 3, that would be a concern and you would adjust your positioning accordingly.
Isn't that cause and effect thing right there?.. hey guys, don't give up the big play...in turn causing them to play timid and softer coverage.

But like I said.. I get your point. We will just see differently on this one...and that's cool too.

With the return of peterson may be using Murphy more in the middle and benching Budda baker who is the ghost of himself

Can't count on the defense, can't count on interception, need to invent new ways to get the ball back. :p

You're right! Watching today it was plain as anything. We simply dont have the personnel to play Man without PP and even with him, it will be tough.

There was nothing wrong with the scheme today, we simply don't have the guys to guard NFL caliber WR's and TE's.

IDK what is up with our LB corps, but they are terrible. Our only hope is that CJ and TS can get to the QB instantly so we can get a stop, cuz there aint no getting around it, guys are gonna be open.

We need a major revamp of our 2ndary.

With PP and Alford it would probably look a lot better. Next week with PP back it should be an instant upgrade. Probably see a lot more man/zone hybrid and man free being an option.

Another part of the equation is if Hicks (or whoever may be the Mike on the field) is getting the play communicated and orchestrated cleanly. In the game today it seemed like several times there was confusion or missed assignments and it's hard to know how much stems from the DC, the MLB or the players in general.

.

What? The reason why you play soft zone is not to get beat over the top. This pass defense is getting barbecued underneath not even giving our CB's and opportunity to make a play on the ball. Many times we have players confused, causing 2 defenders to cover 1 WR leaving a player (TE) wide open. Watch the 1st QTR completion to A. Hooper on 3rd and 11. This is happening over and over. Budda is also playing out of position, instead of being used as HB 2.0.

There was nothing wrong with the scheme today, we simply don't have the guys to guard NFL caliber WR's and TE's.

The scheme today was garbage, VJ went totally soft in the 2nd half of the game and it was painfully obvious. It almost cost us the game. When your CB's are lined up 12-15 yards off the WR at the snap every play against a passing team like ATL you are going to get torched. C'mon Vance Joseph

One knocked down pass all day. Lee Mayberry had a better defense on a Pop Warner team than this team does.
As a famous coach once said of his team when a reporter ask about the team's execution, "I'm in favor of it." :)
That would be John McKay who was coaching the Bucs at the time.

Is Brandon Marshall still available? Reddick should be relegated to just being a pass rush specialist. He's just terrible at everything else

Chandler Jones
Corey Peters
Jordan Hicks
Patrick Peterson
Byron Murphy

These are 5 legit dudes on a good defense. Too early to tell on Zack Allen or the Thompsons. Brock is an ok 3rd CB. Baker is an enigma for me. Gunter is the Cassius Marsh/Brooks Reed of 3-4 DEs. Depth only. Reddick reminded me that he is our new DJ Swearinger.

peterson wasn’t even playing and he said outside of Jones

so that leaves
Peters
Hicks
Murphy

on your list. Murphy is a rookie. Corey Peters is a legit solid NFL player but don’t even try and say he’s elite or a big time playmaker. Hicks is solid at best, we’ve seen some pretty good ILB here and he ain’t a star

It's still pretty amazing that even without our starting CB's, we're sitting at 2-3-1. If the refs hadn't missed the OB hit on Murray in the OT opener, we'd be 3-3 & tied with the Rams.

2 games in a row where the defense gives up a 2 TD lead late in the game. That should not happen. Not an expert but what is Joseph doing late in games.

PS. Can somebody please cover a TE!!!!!

He was not good this game in that regard. But then not covering a TE has plagued the Cards for many years.
He does look improved in a few areas but covering a TE isn't one of them lol. I think he should be a DE honestly. This Sunday against the Giants, VJ should grab one of our CB's & say "your job is to cover the TE no matter where he goes on the field son" lol.

Getting Patrick Peterson back and eventually Robert Alford will definitely help in the secondary. Some new linebackers wouldn't hurt either.

Oh well, lots of holes to fill but if the Cardinals can win some games along the way I will be satisfied for this season. At least the quarterback position is looking solid.

I was rewatching the game and on the Falcons second drive in the first quarter, the D was perfect. Reddick was on top of everything and Murphy played Jones perfectly. Why would the D change up their scheme from how they played that second drive?

contrarian take:

Vance Joseph is doing a decent job -- scheming defensive competence until the opposing offense figures out whats happening and talent takes over

This. It's what drove us bonkers about Clancy P. I can only hope I'm wrong on this going forward...just the way it felt the past couple weeks.

The toughest part about the offensive line is that we all know it has average players on it. The scheme and Murray's development seems to be able to mitigate that lack of talent to a certain degree. If that is the case, we do have to start considering that we may look at other options in the first round of next years draft. Same for WR to be honest. It is a deep class, and if there is not a huge difference between the 2nd and 5th rated WRs, why not look at defense early?

I don't think it will happen unless a guy like Vic Fangio gets fired and comes available. Kingsbury and Keim are not going to want to go away from a 3-4 scheme again, and the list of 3-4 coaches easily considered an upgrade over Joseph is pretty slim.
