"The Cardinals also have offers on the table with defensive lineman Vonnie Holiday, linebacker James Darling and fullback James Hodgins."

From the Rod Graves/Jeff Blake press release.

Graves is trying.

He's failing so far, but he's trying. He can't help it that Colvin took less money to play elsewhere. All that proves is that Colvin has some principles.

I agree I also like the fact that he stated that he was working late into the night trying to get Dexter Jackson locked up. These are all posotive signs and I at least am relieved that the effort does seem to be there!

Like I said....spending money is not this team's problem. Shaking their perception as perpetual losers is.

No argument here Ed.

Ed would you be happy if we signed Jackson? Do you like him, I dont believe I have read any comments from you about him?

Point well taken BUT -

Point well taken BUT -

Three things concern me:

1. If Colvin preferred not to play on the "west coast", why did he spin our wheels? And why wasn't someone associated with our team close enough to the situation to know this well before crunch time?

2. I just get the feeling sometimes that Rod waits for a phone call whereas staff on other NFL teams have a close enough rapport with the player to pick up the phone and schmooz anytime.

3. I fear that Rod feels that all he has to do is act appropriately and things will somehow take care of themselves. It doesn't work that way in the NFL - an industry filled with all kinds of swashbuckling types. If you don't finish off the deal by making something happen, it ain't gonna happen.

Looks like they are still swinging for the fences here although the big fish is gone. Judging from the article, they aren't pursuing Okeafor. Sounds like Holliday is in their sights next.

If you believe that entire article, then maybe his family had some issues with coming to AZ. I also stated on another thread that maybe the defensive coaches didn't sell him enough on their philosophy or how they would use him.

My defensive free agents preview ranked Jackson as the best DB available. I think very highly of him, for what that's worth.

Best Buys

Dexter Jackson, Tampa Bay: Even before his Super Bowl MVP performance, Jackson was a player on the rise. He is undersized but has tremendous range. He is also a modest player who respects his role and tends to his responsibilities. Unfortunately, his post-season showing may have driven his price up.

Larry Whigham, Chicago: For the veteran minimum, this special-teams All Pro would be a terrific addition as a nickel safety and kick-coverage demon. Receivers fear his vicious hits, but he's not much of a cover man anymore.

Donovan Darius, Jacksonville: Darius's interest on the open market may be diminished by his reputation for mental lapses, but he is so young and athletic (like Adrian Wilson) that he might be worth the risk. Defenses can be taught, athletic ability cannot be.

Better than Makovicka as a blocker.

I doubt they're looking to pay him millions.

Bec ause I would say he is a far better blocker than Macovicka and he probably doesnt have a habit of giving away the play thats coming?

Hey Ed what do you think about sammy knight...I personally prefer him over jackson....I feel he is more sure of a bet not to fail...better playmaker.....has 4 years more experience while only being 22 months older.

What is your take on him...I saw in your post you had jackson, whigam, and darrius...i'm assuming 1,2,3...where did you have knight?

I don't know, I disagree with that to some extent.

I mean, Colvin could have said, you know what, they seem like they're trying to field a good team. I'll sign with them, then do my best to recruit other players to come join a good thing.

I didn't have Knight. Call me crazy, I think he's slow and overrated. Shoulder-tackler too, just like Lassiter. He'll create some turnovers but for the price he's surely seeking as a Pro Bowler, I'd pass.
