The recent history where we went 8-8 with John Freaking Skelton at the helm. The recent history where Larry Fitzgerald owns everyone's ass.

The recent history of our god aweful pass blocking:

Yeah that will help with loosening up Mannings stiff neck.

Despite two lousy years, Whis and Kurt Warner did take the Cardinals to the playoffs and even to the Super Bowl. That ain't chopped liver.
And the team was promptly gutted. Gone from the SB team are:

Berry(retired)
Rolle(traded)
DRC(traded)
Edge(FA)
Dansby(FA)
Q(traded)
Okeafor(retired)
Wells(traded)

Among others.

Manning makes trip to Miami

Reuters Get used to it.
Until quarterback Peyton Manning, perhaps the biggest-name free agent since Reggie White (or ever), signs with a new team, his whereabouts will be scrutinized more closely than Lindsay Lohan’s.
According to NBC Miami, Manning is in Miami. A flight carrying Manning landed at Opa-Locka Executive Airport, and he then got into a van. (We’ve yet to determine whether Brad Childress was driving.)
Manning’s presence in Mami doesn’t mean he’s there to visit with the Dolphins. As so many Dolphins fans point out, Manning has a house there. (Hell, he’s rich enough to have a house in every NFL city.)
But the South Florida frenzy that already has emerged regarding Manning won’t be going anywhere until Manning makes his decision. And until proven otherwise, I’ll continue to believe that Manning will, like Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher before him, know that the key to getting the best offer elsewhere will be to get Dolphins owner Stephen Ross to open his wallet as wide as it will go.

I understand that you're passionate about this, but I believe that the Miami Dolphins remain the winningest franchise in the history of the NFL. They won 11 games exactly four seasons ago. They went to the playoffs for five consecutive seasons from 1997 to 2001, and in the twelve years from 1990 to 2001 they went to the playoffs 9 times.

It's impossible to say with a straight face that the Arizona Cardinals of all teams has a richer tradition of success than the Miami Dolphins.
Really? Payton is going to look at how Dolphins fared in 70's, 80', and 90's to make his decision???

Call me an optimist but the flip side of the initial posters perspective:
1) Cardinals can easily get out of the Kolb deal on March 17th.
2) Manning has relationships with members of Cardinal's coaching staff.
3) Larry Fitzgerald is the best WR in the NFL.
4) Dome stadium will provide stable playing enviroment that Manning is used to.
5) Emerging defense so that Manning doesnt have to be a one man army.
6) Very winnable division providing easier path to the play-offs.7) Cap room that allow Peyton to be compensated competivley

8)Cardinals have a need for a number 2 WR and they can bring in his pal Reggie Wayne. 9) An established coaching staff with playoff experience. I'm a firm believer in the saying "Where there's smoke, there's fire". I see more more smoke with Manning and the Cardinals more than Manning with any other team. I'm also a firm believer that Manning is a Cardinal by this time next week. It just makes too much sense.

Please explain "how" from a cap hit standpoint plus the money/cap,impact going forward from cutting Kolb and signing Peyton and possibly Reggie.

I've never fully understood how the cap works - especially now - so please enlighten me.

So, as I am sure you know, NFL contracts are not fully guaranteed. Kolb's current cap hit for next year is 10 million if he stays on the roster. That breaks down as a 1 million dollar base salary (not guaranteed), a 7 million dollar bonus (the much discussed March 17th deadline bonus that is not guaranteed) and 2 million dollars that are part of his signing bonus. He gets that 2 million for each year of his contract regardless of if we keep him or not.

So, if the Cardinals cut him they dont pay his base salary or his bonus, however the DO have to give him his 2 million from his signing bonus, and they have to give him ALL the money for each year of that signing bonus. Which adds up to 8 mil they would have to pay (2mil x 4 remaining years). That puts Kolb's cap hit at 8 million if they cut him, but after that 8 mil they are done, no more money owed.

Its complicated... buts thats the breakdown for Kolb. As for the implications of resigning Manning and maybe Reggie Wayne, it would obviously depend on how much they signed for. But just like the way Kolbs worked. The signing bonus will be guaranteed and the rest will depend upon if they remain on the roster for the length of their deals.

come on K9... I'm not stupid. i was talking about recent history where the Fins have had a below .500 record for 5 of the last 6 years with 3 different coaches in that span and zero playoff success, as opposed to the Cardinals who have been .500 or better four of the last five years, with the same coaching staff and who has shown the ability to win in the playoffs.

And where would that leave us within the context of our overall cap budget and our desire to repair the O- line, add a pass rusher, re-sign Marshall etc.

In other words, will cutting Kolb and signing Manning and Wayne be viable in terms of our overall budget?

Yeah they can make it work if they want too. Sando just put out a piece on espn.com that says basically the same thing. Right now the Cards have about $3 mill available...until they cut Levi and have $20 mill available. Release Stuckey, Porter, etc. and you're looking at about $28 mill. Far more than what should be needed this year to get Peyton under contract...possibly Wayne as well (but I have a hard time seeing them going that route).

Well 20 million a year off the cap for however how many years will cripple any team - not just the colts, The team that signs PM will have a window of 2 years, Imean The Colts let Edge go in 2006 cause they couldn't afford, Harrison, Edge and PM.

at the Colts end PM went down and the Colts collapsed to 2-14. That makes what the Giants did with ELI more impressive than the Colts and Saints.

They pay that much and stilll have talent year to year

getting Peyton could do for the Cards what Reggie White did for the Packers back in 1992... legitimize them in the eyes of the entire league as a fully functioning franchise willing to do whatever it takes to win.

i'd like to see that happen... but I ain't holding my breath.

Wolf was saying that they wouldn't have any cap hit to cut Kolb...not sure how that was coming about.

If he said that, he's dead wrong. If the Cards keep Kolb, he stays at $10 mill this year. If we cut him, we pay $2 mill for every remaining season he has left (4) which put's his cut cost at $8 mill.

So by "history", you mean the last 5 years but not the last 2 years? History is 2008 & 2009 and kind of 2007? Don't worry about immediately before or after?

Of course, Miami was playing in a pretty good division the last 6 years. A little easier to sit exactly at .500 when you play in the NFC West.

Sigh. The recent history when we went 5-11 and then 8-8? Or the Dolphins' recent history where they went 7-9 and then 6-10?

The recent history where Miami's offense was 1.1 points per game better than ours last year, or the one where our offense was ranked 31st in the NFL in 2010?

Maybe it's the recent history where Miami's defense gave up 2 fewer points per game than ours last year? Or maybe it's the recent history where Miami was 6th in overall defense in 2010 while we were 29th?

Let me know which of these recent stats Manning will consider when he looks at which franchise he should join up with.

We know K9. Any team is better than the Cardinals. You tell us that every chance you get.

Yay! Now I get it. Regarding the $20 mil -I'd be cautious about spending Levi dollars dollars before I allocated the necessary money to replace him.

Are those in each year, or in a lump (cap wise?)
