That’s why preseason games, beginning Saturday night against the Chiefs, are so important for Thomas. His challenge, along with that of rookie free-agent Phillip Sims, is to prove they are worthy of being the Cardinals’ third quarterback behind Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton.

“They’re both getting better, but at the same time, they go right back down, then they go up,” coach Bruce Arians said. “They’ve got to stay up. They can’t go back down and start from scratch again. It’s a big test for both of them.”

Instead, he has much to prove to make the team. If Thomas and Sims don’t play well this preseason, the Cardinals’ third quarterback in 2015 could be on another team’s roster at this point.

After Palmer and Stanton play in the first quarter, Thomas will play the second and third, with Sims taking over for the fourth.

Thomas continues to struggle with accuracy, just as he did at Virginia Tech.

“Lazy footwork, normally,” replied Arians, when asked about the reasons for the inconsistency. “Just not consistent mechanics.”

Sims did not give me a warm fuzzy feeling tonight.

Hard to play quarterback when you are running for your life. All in all I was more impressed by Sims than Thomas. Sims demonstrated some touch and ball placement while Thomas will never be more than an area code passer.

I thought Sims looked good. He was running for his life. I would like to see him with time and run when he could for plus yards. I would much rather take a shot on him over Thomas.

Yeah, me too. Thomas made a few nice throws, but he just doesn't have "it". I know when he came in the game it felt like the air was sucked out of the building. I didn't think we could mount drives and score while he was in there, and his teammates didn't seem to believe he could get it done either. There was a noticeable drop in the energy of the team and the crowd.

Sims didn't HAVE to run for his life, he simply needs to learn how to step up into the pocket. He dropped too deep, IMO, and didn't move forward, but laterally. His feet were way too happy. He does throw well on the run, however, but his footwork in the pocket sucks.

Logan didn't know how to use a pocket last year either, but this game he was very good at feeling the pocket and stepping up into it. And frankly, he has never really looked good out there. This was EASILY the best I've seen him play from a mechanics standpoint.

I expected to feel the opposite way, but unless Sims shows he knows how to operate within a pocket, even one that is closing, we should give Logan the rest of the reps in preseason games 3 and 4 and hope he becomes a decent backup, with eyes on the draft next year.

Sims is more pipe than LT.

Oh, and I think that Wolf is dating LT or something..man needs to lay off on the hyperbole and constant praise of a throw you are supposed to make as an NFL QB.

I agree we should let these two settle it for the rest of the preseason whilst NEVER playing palmer and only playing stanton for one series. lol Seriously just give those to a TON of playing time and may the best 3rd stringer win.

I am going to get an ulcer this preseason worrying about our guys health. 1 game down, 3 to go.

I was ready to pull Carson out after the first pass tonight. "Hey it's complete, Carson you look perfect buddy dont change a thing, here's the bench have a good rest of your evening! See you September 13th"

I'm hoping/guessing that, next week, Sims will play before LT. This should give Sims better receivers to work with. Is it likely that BA will play each QB one quarter?

Totally agree. LT was playing with the 2nd team which includes Wattford, Sendlein & Humphries in the OL. Sims was playing with the 3rd and 4th stringers and had to run for his life as the protection broke down.
To really give Sims a fair chance, BA needs to reverse playing time for Sims & LT.

When Sims throws his long ball it has too much air under it. Starting DB's will be able to get to it easily. He does throw on the run well and started to settle down later in the game. Didn't see him go through his reads, more just run and look for an open guy.

This was my impression as well, and why I don't understand the statement that Simms looked better than Thomas. IMO Thomas has clearly improved and I saw Thomas trying hard to go through the projections and play the position smarter instead of free-lancing

LT throws a nice ball. He has a really quick release. He threw it too hard on a couple of plays like Brett Favre used to do when he was young. Some of his throws were low and hard making them harder to handle.

The WR's dropped some passes right in their hands. NFL receivers need to catch these balls no matter what. If it's near you catch it.

The good that I saw was LT going through his reads. That is the hardest to teach the young QB's.

Hopefully he builds on this for the next game.

I felt like I was delivering the ball well,” Thomas said. “The ball was coming out of my hand nice. I understood after a couple plays what the defense was trying to do. I’m sure I missed a couple reads, but I did OK.”

“Logan, I thought, was a victim,” Arians said. “A couple of times we’re in second-and-1 and end up in first-and-20 on holding penalties which set him back. Other than two plays in which he had protection issues, I thought he played pretty solid.”

Thomas threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Brittan Golden from four yards out on third-and-goal to cap a long drive in the fourth quarter, but it was overturned on review as Golden bobbled the ball as he slid out of bounds. The Cardinals went for it on fourth down, and Thomas hit Ryan Spadola with a slant but was stopped at the 1.

“Obviously you want to get in, especially when you end up on the half-inch line,” Thomas said. “It’s alright. It’s something we’ll learn from.”

Sims > Thomas.

Sims going 3-12 indicates otherwise.

I'm neither a fan of Sims or Thomas, but if the preseason ended today, Thomas would be on the team. He showed good pocket awareness and had a number of pinpoint passes.

While Sims was flushed out on a number of occasions due to poor protection, he made that a habit and routinely escaped the pocket too quickly.

Part of being successful in BA's offense is working within the confines of the pocket and surveying the field. For the most part, Thomas did that. Sims did not.

IMO Thomas played good football yesterday. He is big and strong and has power in his throws. Has a good chance if he can show this over the next three games.

TJ, indeed LT would be on the team, if it were a one game audition. That is why you have to reverse the order and play Sims first, so you can get a more accurate comparison.

that is usually standard practice.

From what I saw,.. the job is Logan's to lose. Knowledge of the offense,.. pocket awareness, progressions... Logan is miles ahead of Sims and in the NFL, even when all things are equal,...the guy with the measurable will get the job.

I almost think BA may sit on Sims,...give him limited exposure so he can clear waivers and make the practice squad. The kid does have some game.

Contrary to reports,...Thomas has made progress since last year....I am guessing that the remarks about backsliding were more to motivate for faster improvement. Last pre season Thomas would not have done so well against second teamers.

BA places high value in knowledge of HIS offense...which is why he brought Lindley back last season..... Thomas has far more experience in BA's offense than Sims. That showed on the field as well,....even last pre season Logan was better against the third teams than Sims was last night.
