Andre Roberts is listed as the starting Z receiver on the Cardinals' initial preseason depth chart.

Teams will update depth charts throughout the preseason based on performance in practice and exhibition games. The Cards are sniffing around Lee Evans, but Roberts is currently the favorite to succeed Steve Breaston at flanker. Early Doucet could play the slot in that scenario. Roberts would see constant single teams playing across from Larry Fitzgerald, so he's a deep sleeper. He tore the lid off the Cowboys' secondary late last season, catching five balls for 110 yards and a touchdown in Arizona's 27-26 Week 16 win. Roberts collected 20 targets in the final two games.

Nevertheless, Roberts is a big question mark heading into the PS games. How he does (or how Early Doucett does) will determine our interest in another vet wideout, imo.

Unless Roberts gets injured, he is pretty much locked in at #2. He earned that position based on how he finished last season. Listening to Fitz yesterday on Sirius, Roberts is entrenched at #2.

I remember after the 2nd or 3rd preseason game last year I felt Roberts was a complete bust, the guy couldn't catch a cold and looked lost. However, he displayed what is a rare characteristic by improving as a player during the regular season.

If he's maintained that progression we've got a good replacement for Breaston, looking forward to finding out.

I think this is a big mistake. The kid doesn't handle change well, and has confidence issues when things start to go bad.

I think Roberts will be on of those "Well, he looks great in practice." players that can't do a darn thing on game day.

We will see, but I feel our WR core will look pretty poor by week 4 of the season.

What I do like, is what I hear about DeMarco Sampson. Hopefully he is not just another good story to tell during preseason.

Can't agree.

His progession fron lowly, The Citadel, to effective PR and then receiver last season, shows considerable ability to adapt to change and progress.

Roberts...went from the Citadel to the NFL and by season's end was vastly improving. I think that shows he handles change very well as CC said. The only thing which causes one to fear is that it was only one year of observation, but that is not Robert's fault...it was his first year

count me as one of the concerned about hitching our passing game to one of the following:

unproven (roberts)
injury prone (doucet)
neverhasbeen (stuckey)

yeah there are three of them, so if they each perform well at different times our production may not decrease. but there's something to be said about consistency and in the long run a lack thereof will kill a team.

also, because none of these guys are considered threats fitz is going to see a ton of coverage rolled his way. in other words, not even having a threat opposite him will in essence help the defense to eliminate our best weapon. those guys are going to HAVE to make defenses pay in order for us to have fitz available as a weapon.

With improved QB play, all our WR's will look better than last year.

The biggest change for our receivers this year is having a QB who can get the ball to them.

The Cardinals have a legit #2 Receiving option...he's just not a WR, he's a TE. KW is just shifting gears...Instead of relying on a Boldin type to go over the middle and free of Fitz, he will now be relying on Heap to do the same.

Breaston didn't draw double coverage away from Fitz.

Fitz will pretty much always be doubled IMHO. I just want to get rid of the safety over the top on him as well.

Heap is the other weapon...

i love the todd heap signing. we finally have a legit TE. but he's no "threat." at least, not to the point where teams will be concerned enough not to roll coverage fitz's way.

Excellent points.

If there were ever a team that could go 3-13 and then be positioned to be one of the top teams in the NFC this is it. The Big Red Mystery.

Also where the TE's come into play, being respectable in the middle opens up Fitz on the deep and the deep slant, Roberts too. There will be open receivers..oh yes, there will be open receivers.:D

:raccoon:

I love Steve Breaston, but he is not a very good #2 receiving option (which KC isn't looking at him as).

As far as receiving targets we have Fitz, Roberts, Doucet, Heap, and possibly Housler/Williams/Sampson. We have enough receivers; sure the position can be improved, but we need to see what we have in all the young options on the roster.

Let the young guys play, and it will sort itself out. The Cardinals have proven over the years to be a very good Wide Receiver team.

I'd like to see a legitimate WR2 threat added to the roster as well, but I'd rather see Roberts develop than waste the spot on a pure stopgap. With Floyd, Smith, and Edwards gone (ignoring for the moment whether one wanted each specifically), it's really just Evans and Moss at this point, IMO--unless there's someone I'm forgetting.
