Im not a fan of this move as i dont see him as a real upgrade over anything we already have. The only way it would make sense if they believe Lutui isnt resigning. The guy allowed 8 sacks last season and though are guys werent great last season none of them was that bad. Reggie Wells no matter how bad he looked at times i dont think was charged with any sack and if Lutui resigns as everyone expects he'd still be a better guard imho then Faneca, plus you have potential break out rookies in Keith and Johnson as a well as good vet back up in Bridges. You dont replace potential turnstiles with a more open turnstile.

Totally agree.Alan is down to the threads on his tires. Its not like the Adam Timmerman signing on his second contract after winning a ring with the packers in 2 SB's,That dude rose the level of play with pro bowlers like Pace even. The rams won the SB that first year after Timmerman signed too. This is MUCH different.
I really wish Deuce would sign.we're not gonna let him walk to play for Carrol in Seattle. We are still gonna throw the ball with Matt & he may show skills to be really good at it in our 4 wide sets.
So we mix it up more and run more play action with Matt.So be it.I love our new slot reciever even though everyone knew I loved the longhorn WR for our spot and he was picked earlier in the round we got OUR new KR and field stretcher slot reciever from THE CITADEL where he dominated like Rice & Bruce did at small schools.
I really wonder if Faneca brings anything but attitude. We already have the depth and faneca was gonna already get his 5.5 from the Jets anyway. So we get him on the cheap,if you think he's worth it?I like our own homegrown players myself.
Don't kill me.

I do not see it as any indication that Lutui is out the door, it just is good football sense and having Faneca and Lutui with Wells is GREAT for depth regardless who plays. LUV IT!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Keith at RT over Wells... And between Hadnot and Bridges, I also wouldn't be surprised if Deuce isn't there either given that he still hasn't signed his tender...

Deuce has no choice and I would not let him go for anything. He is playing this thing very poorly. He has no options and will live in the dog house if he doesn't hurry up and get into OTAs. As a back up that staged a sit in and then after a possible lock out year he will not be rewarded with gobs of guaranteed $$$.

To be fair he was blocking for a rookie QB, and rookie QBs tend to take more sacks than a veteran would. I honestly didn't watch more than 2 Jets games last year so I don't know for sure but I bet at least half of those sacks can be placed at the foot of the QB.

Then how do you explain giving up more sacks in 08 then he did in 09 blocking for a Veteran Brett Favre, or the year before that in Ben?

That argument just doesn't float. Especially since he has never been any good at pass blocking going all the way back to his Pitt days under Grimm. Just not his deal, never has been and it never will. He is considering so good because he is a great run blocker and leader, nothing else, nothing more.

I think it is interesting that Hadnot is making more the Faneca.

And at 2.5 mil, I'll take it.

Cause we have no great run blockers on this roster, and a 9 time pro-bowler is the kind of leader I want looking over this young line.

I am not expecting him to come in and play like he used to, and I don't even know if he will start, but I like that he was brought in. Call me crazy, but I truly believe Faneca WANTS to be here.

As a niner fan Im not to happy you guys signed him. I have a feeling he'll do for you what Larry Allen did for us. Just kick ass for one year, add a level of leadership and then retire quietly. This is an immediate improvement over what you have.

I kinda wanted to sign him so that he would mentor Iupati.

I'm cringing that this isn't a depth move and that we don't lift the tender off Deuce. If we do, I see a REAL bad trend happening with this club. This is definitely the dark side of me speaking, but after we just gutted our secondary depth for $ (and after we did last year) and after we've had a year where we lost three productive young guys/leaders of the team, if this a move pre-empting our O-line losing Wells or Deuce, i ain't gonna like it.

Seems to me that some are simply obsessed with their analysis of the situation rather than the situation. Good grief.

We just signed Alan Faneca for 2.5 million. For one year. He's 33 or 34 years old. He's not 44. How in the world is that a bad thing for this team? Seriously?

If it does, Faneca didn't cause it. He simply muted the sound of the shoe hitting the floor. IMO.

no, Faneca didn't, but our inability to get young guys to sign contracts again would have. I've got no problems with Faneca. He's not great but he's not being paid to be great. Just have my fear that this move isn't gonna be made in a vacuum.

Faneca plays a different position from Lutui. I have no idea what's up with him. I have some connections to the Tongan community in the East Valley. If this continues on for another week, maybe I'll send out some signals.

But, check this out: http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_...e=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1

I'm not 100% on this ratings, but you're going to have to scroll down pretty far to find Lutui. But you're going to have to scroll down even farther to find Reggie Wells.

I wonder if Reggie was much, much worse than any of us really thought last year. Fourth-worst LG in the NFL? :barf:

Reggie has never had to play with pressure on him before now. Both Wells and Faneca are going to be playing for their last contracts (probably). Let the competition begin.

I wouldn't be happy if they just withdraw the tender on Deuce, but I'm not sure that's really something they can do at this point. Considering the improvements that Deuce has made each season in the NFL, he maybe thinks that he's worth a long-term committment.

All I know is dude better not come in weighing 370.

I agree with everything you say. Except:

1.Lutui could become a better guard than Faneca, but Lutui has been highly inconsistant.

2. 2.5 mil for Faneca is a pretty sweet one year deal.

3. And most important, I have become extremely tired of the fact our offensive linemen have had NO competition for the last few years. I like that there is going to be an extremely high level of competition on the offensive line this year.

Amen to the competition theme Muffin-----This is going to be one hell of a training camp.

You really that high on Lutui and Wells ?

They are good players no doubt. Wells will be 30 next year, and Lutui has been solid but is he worth the big money that he seems to think he deserves ?

Is Lutui (a Denny Green guy) have any more promise than Herman Johnson, or Rex Hadnot ?

Not saying you or anyone else is crazy for sweating the idea of losing two guys that are part of our playoff run. JMHO is all.

What you say makes sense to a certain extent, because of the money im not as down on the deal as i normally would be but i just dont feel he really adds much if anything to what we already have. His only strength is that he used to be good in run blocking and the problem with that is that most of our o-line are pretty good blocking for runners as it is we need better pass protecting lineman.

Lutui has no option but the sign his tender.

True but Lutui's hold out is longer then any i can remember for a player to sign so ive no idea what his plan is by doing this

To be fair he was blocking for a rookie QB, and rookie QBs tend to take more sacks than a veteran would. I honestly didn't watch more than 2 Jets games last year so I don't know for sure but I bet at least half of those sacks can be placed at the foot of the QB.

I can see what you're saying but it doesnt really excuse his continously spiraling decline. He had a poor 2008 and a terrible 09 and he has been identified as by far the weakest link in the Jets O-line. Pass blocking has never been his forte so the type of QB behind him isnt going to make much difference. Ill repeat he adds nothing to what we already have.

I think it is interesting that Hadnot is making more the Faneca.

Yep and i think it means Hadnot will be starting and as we know the coaches are high on Sendlein so it probably also means Hadnot is the starter at one of the guard spots with Wells, Luitui and possibly Keith competing for the other spot.

I really don't agree with that at all.

The Cardinals just recently were able to run the ball with effectiveness. I will give them maybe one year, or a year and a half that this line could produce something that even looked like a running play.

I think the reason Gandy, Wells, and Lutui have become expendable is because Whiz wants better run blocking.

What are the chances that somethings in the works....Lutui for some CB. He'll have to sign his tender obviously. I remember how happy Lutui was when he was drafted by the Cards, his favorite childhood team, had tears in his eyes, blah, blah. Somebody is in his ear.

What a diff. 2 years make...

IF I remember right this board went into melt-down when Faneca signed w/the Jets. Fitz' contract status was the main culprit as well as the usual Cardinals "too cheap", etc. Well, my friends, we've come full circle 2 years later. I've always been told you can NEVER have enough quality lineman (both on offense & defense) ...And CB's. I believe that's a true statement.

So, Faneca is a Card. I say...GOOD! :)Leadership/knows how to win/terrific run-blocker/ 1 yr. deal at a decent price...Yes, 2 more years of wear & tear on the tires but I honestly believe he'll contribute. I like the signing!:) GO CARDS! :D

Good lets keep our eyes open for other veteran players that might get cut like Shawne Merriman, Todd Heap and preferably CBs.

A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin.

Could be a trade opportunity too, right?
