THE SERIES
In preseason action, the Cardinals and Chargers have met 15 times since 1970 and this year will mark the fifth consecutive year the clubs are meeting in preseason play. The Cardinals have won the last three
contests and lead the overall preseason series by that margin, 9-6. This year marks just the fourth time in those 15 games that the Cardinals are hosting the Chargers (1975, ’92, ’01). Nine of the meetings have taken place in San Diego and three were held at neutral sites: Cleveland (1970), Seattle (1974), and Toyko (1976).
The Cardinals and Chargers have met 10 times in regular season action. Though San Diego leads the series 7-3, the total differential is just 18 points (237-219). The most recent meeting was on 9/22/02 at
Sun Devil Stadium when the Chargers scored a 23-15 victory. Based on the NFL schedule rotation in place through 2009, the Cardinals are next scheduled to play the Chargers in 2006 in San Diego. After hosting them in 2002 at Sun Devil Stadium, the Chargers will not visit the Cardinals again until 2010 at the earliest.

LAST WEEK
Vikings 23 , CARDINALS 6
August 14, 2004 – HHH Metrodome – (63,658)
The Cardinals made their preseason debut and first-year head coach Dennis Green returned to face his former team for the first time. The Vikings took advantage of several big plays and emerged with the 23-6 win. Arizona’s offensive starters played the entire first quarter and into the second while the #1 defensive unit played a bit longer. The Cardinals did not commit a turnover and took it away twice via interceptions but were sacked seven times while recording none themselves. The two teams also combined for 17 accepted
penalties, including nine by Arizona. On the game-opening drive, the Vikings reached the Arizona 43 before FS Quentin Harris ended the drive with an INT in the end zone off Daunte Culpepper. Later in the first quarter, the Cardinals offense advanced to the Minnesota 28 and scored first thanks to a 46-yard Neil Rackers FG. That lead disappeared early in the second quarter when Culpepper and WR Randy Moss connected on a 48-yard scoring pass. They increased the lead to 13-3 after Aaron Elling FGs on the next two possessions. A 33-yard Rackers FG made it 13-6 late in the third but RB Mewelde Moore answered quickly with a 39-yard scoring run three plays later. Back-up kicker Dan Orner added a 46-yard FG midway through the fourth that provided the final margin of victory.
RB Emmitt Smith (thigh), WR Larry Fitzgerald (ankle), FB James Hodgins (shoulder) and DT Kenny King (wrist) all exited early with injuries but none is believed to be sidelined for any lengthy period of time.
