Cardinals | Team continues to monitor K. Collins
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 08:47:11 -0700

Jim Jenkins, of the Sacramento Bee, reports the Arizona Cardinals are continuing to monitor the status of free agent QB Kerry Collins (Raiders). "Kerry has been a good starter in this league," said Cardinals head coach Dennis Green, "and is somebody we might look at, but it hasn't gone any further than that."

Depth never hurts and there are worse QB's in the league. As long as we don't over-pay for a 3 game starter than it's cool with me...
and since I pretty much run the NFL now I guess Denny would care if it's cool with me.

If we do not make a move I would think we are taking a QB with the #10 pick. I still want Davis but would not mind Cutler or Young.

The lack of pursuit of a vet QB should at least indicate that AZ is INTERESTED in the possibility of a QB at 10.

It makes sense to wait until the draft is finished which is what Graves said they would do.

wants wrong with collins. he would make a great back-up qb. with his experience this offense wouldn't miss a beat if warner went down.

Yes it would. He is no Warner. He may be a decent stopgap but he certainly wouldnt keep us on par IMO.

Watching Kerry Collins play the game of football over the last 10 years is a great start. His debacle in Oakland last year while having a guy like Moss to throw to is another clue.

all i know is that collins took the panther to the nfc championship game. he didn't do anything for the saints due to personal problems. then he took the gaints to the super bowl. that consitutes doing something in the nfl. granted he could have done a lot better in oakland. i see a hit\miss trend here. if this trend holds up then collins is going to hit.

Oakland is a complete mess. It's hard to judge anybody by what they did there.

Moss was hurt all year long, he played because he's tough but he was really gimped.

Collins needs a strong QB coach like Fassell or Sean Payton to push him, get in his ear every day and keep him focused. As a starter going in I would be very scared, as a backup I believe you could do far worse.

I doubt very seriously he will be here, but stranger things have happened.

I think Collins is a decent QB. He's not nearly as bad as some people say he is. I think he's in the top half of QBs in the league. Not as good as Warner, but still decent when he has time.

That said, I don't think he'd be a good fit for the Cards. First, he's 33 years old. Our starter is already 35, why get a backup who's only 2 years younger. Second, he's expensive. I think he was scheduled to get $9M this season. He's not worth that much money.

What the Cards need is a QB for the future. Collins would only be a stop gap between Warner and whoever is the QBOF.

this would be a great pick up as a back-up BUT I don't think the budget is going to allow that kind of $$$ for someone to hold a clipboard or headset...martin/maddox/feidler $$$ is more likely

I pretty much agree. He is easily sufficiently good to be a backup. People get a little too spoiled in looking for a backup. However I would prefer someone younger, cheaper, and more mobile. The top 2 QBs both hitting their mid 30s doesnt seem very wise.

NFL.com is reporting that Collins is thinking of retiring if he can't get a starting QB job at a good salary:

What a baby. That is exactly the type of mentality that has made this guy a journeyman his entire career.

He played terribly last year and didn't resemble a starting QB. And yet after a performance like that he expects to be given a good deal and the nod as a starter.
