Cards Reach 53-Man Roster, Sign Cornerback McDaniel
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Saturday, August 30, 2003

Tempe, Arizona-The Arizona Cardinals have reached the
NFL's 53-player regular-season roster limit by
releasing 11 players, placing three others on reserve
lists, and signing a cornerback.

The team waived linebacker Charles Burton, tight end
Lorenzo Diamond, kicker Tim Duncan, linebacker Tony
Gilbert, center Steve Grace, defensive end Alton Moore, cornerback Rhett Nelson, wide receiver Nathan Poole, running back Travis Prentice, fullback Joshua Rue, and guard Tony Wragge.

Two players-defensive tackle Talifaia Atoe (ankle) and cornerback Michael Stone (torn pectoralis)-were placed on injured reserve.

Offensive lineman Frank Garcia, who will be suspended
by the NFL for the first month of the season, will be
added to the reserve/suspended list. Offensive lineman
Raleigh Roundtree was placed on the
reserve/non-football injury list following removal of
his spleen August. 6.

Also, seven-year free-agent veteran cornerback Emmanuel McDaniel has been signed to bolster the club's defensive backfield following a season-ending knee injury to starter Duane Starks and Stone's relegation to injured reserve.

McDaniel originally was selected by the Carolina
Panthers in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft.
Following his rookie season with Carolina, the 5-9,
180-pounder from East Carolina signed with Indianapolis
in 1997, spent the 1998 season on the Miami Dolphins'
practice squad, then played for the N.Y. Giants from
1999-2001. Last year with Carolina, he played in 16
games (three starts), registering 31 tackles, 2
interceptions, and 4 pass deflections. In 60 career NFL
games (eight starts), he owns 104 tackles, 8
interceptions, and 25 pass deflections.

guess michael young stays..good - I think he is ok on special teams.
practice squad picks: Lorenzo Diamond, Tony
Gilbert, Alton Moore, Nathan Poole (or wragge - if eligible), Rue. I guess eason is on the squad - at least until we sign another corner! Kendrick rogers - not a surprise now - but he would have been at the beginning of training camp...any rookie free agents on the roster?

by the way..we have 3 tackles on the roster who are eligible to play - tanner, davis and bryant..if davis or bryant go down - tanner cannot play every play for very long..would guess we will get a dtackle soon..

Practice squad will be easy to set. If these guys can slide thru:

Rue
Diamond
Wragge
Gilbert
Nelson or Moore

Stone lucked out or he would have been flat cut. He gets paid right now?????????

Pinnacle you beat me to it!

Wow, we kept seven WRS. Color me surprised.

It sure makes a mockery of all the Kevin Kasper/McAddley arguments we've had lately.

I wonder if anyone will pick up Rue - he's a fullback, which I doubt is high on people's wish list right now for waivers.

I hope he makes it to the practice squad. I haven't seen any of the games but the way people say he blocks, then I don't want him going to another team.

Are you sure? I think that we only kept six.

 Poole was cut, which makes it six. Or am I forgetting someone?

3. McAddley
4. Boldin
5. Kasper
6. B. Johnson
7. ??????

I'm wrong. Senior moment. Happens a lot but not as often as my wife says it does.

Actaully I think you are pretty close, but I dont think we will keep Wragge on the practice squad. Roundtree will come back in 6 weeks and Garcia will be back in 4 weeks which means we will be getting rid of 2 olinemen when they come back.

Rue, Diamond, Gilbert, Nelson, Moore.

Looks like Stone gets one more year to prove himself.

CARDINAL CUTS

11 cuts:

The team waived linebacker Charles Burton, tight end Lorenzo Diamond, kicker Tim Duncan, linebacker Tony Gilbert, center Steve Grace, defensive end Alton Moore, cornerback Rhett Nelson, wide receiver Nathan Poole, running back Travis Prentice, fullback Joshua Rue, and guard Tony Wragge.

SKORPS EDUCATED GUESS

The don't let the door hit you on your way out list

1. WR Nathan Poole. Good possession guy, a step slow, the 7th WR on a 6 WR team.
2. K Tim Duncan. Good kicker who will be an NFL starter some day. Bill Gramatica is better.
3. C/OG/OT Jason Starkey. Too small, too slow, no upside. Nice man but not an NFL player.
4. DB Rhett Nelson. Headed for the practice squad. Next year he'll be ready to compete.
5. DB Michael Stone. A complete bust. Failed at both DB and S.

3 right………….

The either/or list. One stays/one goes.

6. RB Josh Scobey/RB Travis Prentice. Prentice had the better camp but Scobey is practice squad elligible.
7. DE Dennis Johnson/DE Alton Moore. The loser leaves now, the winner gets cut next year. Johnson is a bust.
8. DT Barron Tanner/DT Talifaia Atoe. Tanner is obese. Atoe may be practice squad bound.
9. TE Mike Banks/TE Lorenzo Diamond. Very tough choice. Both have upside. Loser is practice squad guaranteed.
10. MLB Michael Young/MLB Tony Gilbert. Maybe both go? Yes. See #13 below.

All right in terms of the choices....

Doomed by sheer numbers or youth.

11. FB Joshua Rue. Came in too late. Fabulous upside. Dare we try to sneak him through waivers to the practice squad?
12. C Steve Grace. Forced out by sheer numbers and Cameron Spikes and Frank Garcia.
13. MLB Tony Gilbert. Practice squad.

All right.... OVERALL GRADE = A

My un-educated guess at who'll be in need of the U-haul:

Atoe, Burton, Diamond, Duncan, Grace, Harris, Moore, Nelson, Poole, Prentice, Rogers, Rue, Wragge, Young (14)

Got lucky. !0 of 11 cuts on my list – Who needs a pay close attention…:D
