Cards Entertain Cornerback Tod McBride
The Cardinals entertained former Packers cornerback Tod McBride on Monday, March 17 at the Cardinals Training Facility in Tempe. It was the last of free-agent visits for McBride, who has already taken prior trips to meet with the Cowboys and the Falcons. He received an offer from the Falcons today and is hopeful that the free agency period will soon end for him.
McBride spent the last four years in Green Bay in a back-up role and is mainly looking for an opportunity to compete for a starting position.
“I am looking for a starting job and success on the field and off the field for my family – just an opportunity to have a fair shot to help someone win some games,” shared McBride. “I was in a system where they had their implemented corners. When anyone got hurt, I was asked upon to do my duty, but I really wasn’t given a fair opportunity to start. Free agency provides that opportunity.”
McBride felt from his visit with the Cardinals staff that the team would give him that shot.
“Duane Starks is a veteran guy that has established himself in this league,” observed McBride. “To be honest with you, the other guy on the right side, that would be my competition if I were to sign in Arizona.
“There is also competition at both places (Atlanta and Dallas). The good thing about it is that is really what I have been asking for—really the opportunity that okay if I am the best guy, then I am your guy. If I am not the best at that position, then so be it, but the last couple of years in Green Bay I didn’t feel like I had that opportunity so I am just looking for that right now.”
McBride, a stand-out at UCLA, was converted from a wide receiver to a defensive back, a move he credits in part to Cardinals defensive coordinator Larry Marmie.
“Coach Marmie is a good man,” recalled McBride of the former UCLA defensive backs coach. “He’s a class act. He was one of the first coaches that told me to make that switch in college because I was giving his guys a little trouble out there as far as the physical side of the ball. He really was one of the guys that first suggested that move.”
McBride did not become a full-time cornerback until entering the NFL ranks. He posted
42 tackles, 1 forced fumble and one interception for the Pack in 2002. His career totals are 137 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 3 interceptions.
