The Arizona Cardinals on Monday became the second team in three months forced to forfeit allotted spring or summer practices for violating the league's collective bargaining agreement rules governing offseason workouts.

In a joint statement, NFL executive vice president Harold Henderson and NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw announced that an investigation found the Cardinals had overstepped both the "intensity level and tempo" permitted by the rules during so-called "organized team activity" days.

Under an agreement by the NFLPA and the NFL Management Council, the Cardinals forfeited the final four days of the club's voluntary workout program, which were to have begun Monday. The team will have no workouts now until it assembles for training camp at Northern Arizona University on Aug. 1.

"We have been informed of the decision by the Management Council," said Cardinals vice president of football operations Rod Graves. "We're very respectful of the CBA and are taking the appropriate measures to make sure this does not reoccur."

Team and league sources said a group of Arizona players had complained to their union representative about some of the drills included in coach Dennis Green's practices. Two veteran Cardinals contacted on Monday declined to discuss the matter. It was not immediately clear when the violations occurred.

In May, the league penalized the New York Giants, taking away two of the team's 14 allotted "organized team activity" days, charging that coach Tom Coughlin kept them at the stadium beyond the prescribed limit for offseason programs and that he mandated players report for breakfast.

The violation by the Cardinals is believed to be the first for the franchise. Teams can be penalized by forfeiture of draft choices for repeat violations.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I guess we have a few players that don't realize you have to work hard to win in the NFL.

I don't know about that. Just imagine going full speed 11 on 11 in no pads. How happy would you be if you were a O-lineman trying to stop a blitzing defensive player when you don't have even a helmet on. Imagine the impact of a d-lineman running into Leonard Davis with no pads on when both are going full speed. This has little to do with working hard, and a lot to do with getting injured. Don't forget, these guys aren't getting paid yet. If they get injured now, and are cut during camp they don't see a dime. I could see being a bit pissed. 7 on 7 is one thing, those guys work in space, but 11 on 11 at full speed with no pads is insane.

I thought they all signed injury waivers, to protect them and pay them in case of injury...I remember this being an issue a couple years ago with our draft picks...

That was for draft picks who hadn't signed a contract yet.

pathetic

apparently we were good enough last year to prove we don't really need to work hard or really need the practice.

how do these guys expect to win if they don't get better? i'm horribly disgusted and am considering revoking my new fanship of this team. what a disgusting display.

They do wear helmets, just not the standard issue body armor.

Geez bro what do you expect? The Cards don't need to practice. I mean let's review last year's records shall we:

2003 Arizona Cardinals
Record: 4 - 12 - 0
Points scored: 225 (#32 of 32 in the NFL)
Points allowed: 452 (#32 of 32 in the NFL)

When you are dead last in scoring and dead last in keeping people from scoring against you - why practice? Set your expectations low that way you are't dissapointed....

For those who show, they better be prepared for serious work outs. They will wish they were back at voluntary camp. I really don't think it will be revenge but I do think DG will again push it to the limits to find out who will stay and who will walk, hopefully within the CBA guidelines. Let the lazy a$$ full of themselves players walk and those that want to play and win prevail. We need a roster full of McKinnons, Tillmans and Boldins. Lose the lazy, play when I want to players; go with our blessings. Who will pick them up? Who knows, where are Mac(loved the guy) and Bugel (ehh?) coaching now? Hopefully they are assistants with a strong head coach and GM who can teach them a bit more about discipline. DG will NOT be Buddy Ryan, IMO, but he will bring respectability to the Cards. 9-7 baby!!

From Chris Motenson's Chat Wrap, in response to a question posed about the Cardinals losing practices:

"... Anyway, I didn't see the practice tape, but these so-called "professional" players who whine need to count their blessings.
