And Jerry Jones opinion or comments have anything to do with this team how?

Because he was talking about the stragy he and many of the other succesful teams use. Like Phili and the pats.

We are now using the same approach, since MB put Graves in charge.

Some of you want a big splash but that isn't how the patriots have had success. It has been slow and steady cap management over a period of time.

As for Stout and creative contracts, just exactly how much more creative do you want. Warners contract looks pretty good to me ?

 It's hard to respond reasonably to questions that are faulty at their foundations... But I gave it a shot:

Everyone in the NFL gives a damn about "value" in free agents. Your top-shelf RB is only as good as his last season... until the next one starts. If we throw $25 million and Shawn Alexander and he puts up 1300 yards and 8 TDs, that's not good value, and we're in trouble for trying to fix other positions the next season (like #2 or nickel cornerback because Macklin will be a free agent). That's not good value. The Steelers have been great the past decade because they understand the value of their players and once the demands exceed the value, they let the players walk. The reason that the Seahawks are apparently willing to let Alexander walk is because they don't feel that his value lines up to his price tag. Same with Edge and the Colts. Do you really think that you know better?

Would I be excited if the Cards signed Edge, Bentley, and Peterson? Depends on the contract amounts--everything does in the NFL. Spending like drunken sailors doesn't get you very far--just ask Daniel Snyder. Or Jerry Jones. But we've already talked about this. Or, I have. You haven't bothered to respond.

I'm really not all that hot-to-trot for Peterson for a number of reasons. Mainly because his cost exceeds his value (at least to the 49ers), but also because Sam Cowart (a player that I liked when he was with the Bills) had the same injury and was never the same player again. If we got Peterson for Huff money, I'd be ecstatic. If we got Peterson for Roosevelt Colvin money, much less so.

I'll take a well-built team in October that can sign their pending free agents ahead of time over a bunch of headlines in March.

But that's just me.

I rarely agree with many of your posts but this is the best response to the "if we don't sign top tier FA's then I'll never follow the Cardinals again" banter that permeates the board these days.

This is basically my view that I think is feasible and makes a lot of sense, posted by Ed B:

I think there's a difference between overpaying a good player with superstar money and paying a legitimate superstar. Does anyone question Alexander's production? Anything's possible, but it's loony to predict that he and James will somehow turn to crap overnight. Possible but certainly not likely.

Antoine Winfield is a second-tier CB. Duane Starks was a 3rd-tier CB. They happened to be the best CB available when their contracts expired, so they got paid like blue-chip Pro Bowl guys. That's not smart. But Alexander is probably the best in the game. It's not like we're talking about paying Chester Taylor $30 million or something.

It wouldnt be realistic to assume that Edge or Alexander would turn into crap overinight much like a Lecharles Bentley, Tripplet, etc.... Sure it could happen. But the odds are especially this year with teh names in FA that a BIG SPLASH could and will majorly upgrade thsi team.

Larry Tripplet isn't anywhere in the same League as Edge or Alexander. And yet, plenty of first-tier FAs who were mutiple Pro Bowl players were total flops once they got high-dollar deals. You can see many of their names on this very thread. Hugh Douglas and Javon Kearse spring instantly to mind.

I disagree that Winfield was a second-tier CB. Ed underrates him severely.

You still seem to be confused that "name" equals or supposes "production." Again, if Alexander puts up 1300 and 8 TDs next season, but cashes a $20 million check, is that good value? That's not money anyone gets back. There's a reason that the Seahawks don't want to pony up the big dough for their own player.

Well it seems that in the past few years we pony up 25 mill for a guy. They do good or don't. But yes we have money do it again next season. If we could get say alexander at 6 for 40 million. I wouldn't say that is bad at all. The cap is going up by millions of dollars a year. The rate of increases seems at least that it is going up even FASTER. I think Alexander is worth the extra 15 million (with an additional year no less) and one year later than say an okeafor. We CAN afford to sign ONE big name free agent to a big deal. You don't have to have 15 guys making 3 or 4 million a year. You can have 13 or 14 guys and 1 that gets a big check. We are in FINE shape to add ONE guy to a big contract. One guy doesn't create a bad cap situation. One guy won't break the bank and not allow us to resign our players.

I would take edge or alexander. I'm not saying we have to get them. I think no matter what we need to get ol. If we get ol our running game would improve. We get either one of those two and ol our running game should be top notch.

There are other ways to do business, like only getting the value free agents. But since everyone wants to do that the people it helps is those willing to spend for the top guys. If everyone doesn't want to pay alexander or james, because they are 'too expensive' their market value drops probably a mil a season. Meanwhile value guys are going up in price and aren't so much of a value because more teams are targeting them. If a value guy is worth 2-3 million a season and gets four from us, and a guy that's worth 7-8 million a season (and in the past might get 8-9) gets signed for 6-7 million like a james or alexander. Then what's the better value. The high-end might be off, but if you are going to spend more on someone...this IS the best year I've seen to do it. At least thats my opinion on how things are showing up.

We need a running game
The market is saturated at rb position.
The cap was not only going to go up by an abnormally huge amount, but that amount will be even bigger because of the new CBA. Any increases by signing one big guy would be easily absorbed. Easily.

We are in a GREAT position to pick up our needs for a value price compared to other teams. You do THAT year in and year out and we will improve.

Not to mention that this year is the year to make a splash (as been said over and over again). If we need a marquee runningback next year...odds are the quality won't be there, and the price will be much higher. An alexander this year can probably be had for 10-12 million less in the life of a contract then next year...assuming a seven year deal.

The cards won't be cap strapped, and if they got alexander and signed him big, they still won't be strapped years from now. It's just you don't want to make a habit out of dishing out the big contracts. The cards haven't in recent years, and I doubt they will in the future.

Hey I'd take 1300 yrds and 8tds. And if we don't get a better ol, that is all we could ever expect out of alexander or james. But if we get another ross and pass on james/alexander. I don't know if j.j. or lendale would get 1100 and 7tds. Maybe the 7tds, but 1100 yds would be awfully tough.

Not to mention I have a feeling next season will make all free agents this year look like a steal.

At least thats my honest opinion

This is so funny now. My question, was this really a smoke screen or did their strategy change with the CBA?
