Do you guys think things can still get interesting after the Manning fallout? I mean there are some QB's the Cards could still try and bring in there.

He would rather be cut.

Would he? So he can go make 2 million on someone's bench next year? I am telling you guys, he would almost no market if he became a free agent, and any contract he signed would probably devoid of guaranteed money.

Arizona offers him his best chance to start and biggest pay, even if its renegotiated down to less than half.

He would rather be cut.

They are simply changing his roster bonus to an option bonus and prorating it over the contract. He gets the $$$ now, and the Cards get about $6M in CAP relief in 2012. That's the restructuring as it stands.

Apparently you missed the "nickle" part of my point.

and apparently you missed the end of the season where he was the starter and the defense actually started to play well... and you missed the part where the guys we're depending on to replace him have not only never shown the ability to produce at a high level but are also coming off really bad injuries.

the idea that Marshall was a nickle DB... after taking the starting job halfway through the season and then being named the defensive MVP by our coordinator is spin at it's finest.

Marshall loss will hurt us. But I would rather fix the OL.

Well, apparently you missed the fact that he's seen as a starter in Miami and the Cards view him a nickle corner / safety and they are not prepared, at this point, to pay over $5M for that role. I like him, but can think of better ways of spending that money in a tight CAP year.

Can't forget him getting schooled and blown away on a 90+ yard TD against Pittsburgh after AW screamed at him to get back.

P.S. He took the starting role away from an UDFA in his first season under the big tent.

i heard his restructure will be
from 10.5 salary to 4.5 salary..

Cardinals have great leverage to re-negotiate with Kolb. He sucked it up last year and nobody would come close to paying him what we are if he were cut...not to mention even less of a chance to compete for a starting job vs Arizona.

I really hope we did change his contract. Maybe not less money overall but less guaranteed money, smaller cap hit this year, and less risk after that.

I knew Kolb wasn't going anywhere late Tuesday because Manning wouldn't decide by the Cards deadline.

It's from what I glean, strictly a lowering of the CAP this year by about $6M by turning his roster bonus into an option bonus and prorating it over the existing deal. He doesn't lose any $$$.

my problem really is more with the fact that the Cards viewed their "MVP of the Defense" as a nickle corner/safety and guys coming of major injuries or were flat out terrible last year as starting material.

they went with the cheaper option, which have proven nothing. i'm not a fan of that and can't imagine why anyone else would be.

Let me be clear. I like him and wish they could have worked something out. But, there are certain CAP related realities this year that have to be factored in whether one likes it or not. Obviously, they believe that the return of Toler makes him expendable.

yeah... i know... but just not sure how they can make such a determination about a guy who they haven't seen with live bullets... and is coming off injury. That 2nd corner spot has been such a problem for years, that I guess I just ascribe to the a bird in hand (who's young and played very well) is better than one in the bush with a bad wing.

in passing league, a trioka of PP, Marshall and Toler would have provided strength to the defense and versatility that I think we really need.

Well hindsight being 20/20 I tend to agree, but with the possibility of signing Manning I don't think the Cards felt they could afford 5 mil on Marshall. I tend agree with you, with Toler coming off injury, I would have felt better with him as the nickle back, and Marshall as second corner. If Toler plays well, then eventually move PP to safety. Oh well.

Do you know this? Is this a fact? Or are you just making a logical assessment?

Because - if we do get $6-mil in 2012 cap relief from Kolb, that's huge considering our FA needs.

Fact: $5.75M saving against 2012 CAP.

I just laid this out in another thread.

While it does save us money THIS year, it makes the probably of cutting him in 12 months even more painful.

Before this adjustment to his contract he was looking at a 13 million cap figure in 2013. A 9 mil salary (up from 1 mil this year), the 2 mil signing bonus, and a 2 mil roster bonus.

Basically they doubled down on his remaining roster bonus, which makes releasing him in 12 months trigger an absurd 10 million+ cap hit just to tell him to buzz off.

So, now with this change he is looking at a cap figure probably around 15 million. I will give it the Shane "Manning Guarantee" that Kevin Kolb will not make that cap figure seem remotely acceptable.

I hope they use this extra money very wisely this season, because barring a miracle its going to really plug us in the corn-hole in 12 months.

Heck! There's no way we were going to get out of paying the money we owed without cutting him and being shy a #1 or #2 QB. You can make the case that we're mortgaging a small piece of our future, but we need the cap room now in light of our FA needs. Plus - there's supposed to be a major increase in cap budgets in a year or two so that we can better handle the spread-out obligation then.

Can anybody post a link to Kolb's apparent restructuring. Until I see it somewhere concrete, I don't believe a thing!
