Cards planning park for fans

Long-suffering fans of the Arizona Cardinals will at least have a nice place to hang out on game days next year, when the team moves into its new stadium in Glendale.
The Cardinals plan to install two large grassy areas as part of its "Sportsmans Park" on the stadium's west and southwest sides, where fans can picnic or throw around a football. The team is considering having concerts and inflatable jumpers for kids. The Cardinals also plan to plant 1,240 shade trees, including many that turn red in the fall, around the outside of the nearly $430 million complex off Loop 101 and Maryland Avenue.
The team is scheduled to unveil images and additional information today at www.azcardinals.com.
"We want to provide an unparalleled site and environment that will provide a pre- and post-game experience like no other," Michael Bidwill, the team's vice president and general counsel, said Wednesday. "We want to make sure it's a great tailgate experience . . . .There is nothing else like it."
Bidwill said the premier area for fans would be the "Great Lawn," an 8-acre area of turf west of the state-of-the-art $370.6 million stadium. Three rows of sycamore trees will surround the lawn, which will be accessible even on non-game days. Coach Dennis Green described plans for the outside of the stadium as "incredible."
"For the hours leading up to a game it is a very attractive part to the whole experience," Green said. "Fans will love it."
The team, which has had just one winning season since moving from St. Louis to the Valley in 1988, will offer 14,000 on-site parking spaces, and it will use another 6,000 parking spots at nearby Glendale Arena, Bidwill said.
Bidwill declined to disclose how much parking would cost. Parking is free for events at Glendale Arena, but Bidwill said there will be a charge to park there for Cardinals games.
The city of Glendale, which paid for nearly all of the arena and the parking lots, is allowing the Cardinals to use those parking spaces. Bidwill declined to say how much revenue the Cardinals would receive from the city-owned lots. City officials did not return calls.

Crap. I was sure hoping to get some free parking next year. Hopefully it's not more than $5.
