Tempe, Arizona —- Linebacker Gerald Hayes, the Arizona
Cardinals’ third-round (70th overall) selection in the
2002 NFL Draft, has agreed to the terms of a three-year
contract.
One of the marquee defenders in the Big East Conference
the past three seasons, the University of Pittsburgh
middle linebacker garnered national attention as a
senior when he became the first Panther defender to
record three consecutive 100-tackle seasons since
all-America linebacker Jerry Olsavsky from 1986–88.
Hayes finished his career with 387 tackles (243 solos),
13.5 quarterback sacks, 51 stops for –172 yards, 9 pass
deflections, and 2 interceptions while starting 36 of
44 games.
Last year, the 6–1, 238-pounder earned second-team
all-America notice from The Sporting News and CNN/SI
and was an all-Big East Conference first-team choice,
the first Panther linebacker to earn that honor three
times. Last fall he registered a career-high 133
tackles (94 solos), 2 quarterback sacks, 19 tackles for
loss, 2 pass interceptions, 4 pass deflections, 1
fumble recovery, and 2 forced fumbles.
Hayes becomes the fourth member of Arizona’s 2003 NFL
Draft class reach terms. The team previously signed
Georgia linebacker Tony Gilbert (sixth round-b, 210th
overall) on June 2, Clarion offensive tackle Reggie
Wells (sixth round-a, 177th overall) on June 4, and
Alabama defensive end Kenny King (fifth round, 141st
overall) on June 10.
The Cardinals have three remaining draftees yet to
agree to contract terms -— wide receiver Bryant Johnson
(first round-a, Penn State), defensive end Calvin Pace
(first round-b, Wake Forest), and wide receiver Anquan
Boldin (second round, Florida State).
The reporting date for training camp at Northern
Arizona University in Flagstaff is Friday, July 25.
Two-a-day workouts begin Saturday, July 26.
