Probably the best option they had.
They can still negotiate a long-term contract, but if another team signs him, it is 2 1st rounders. I don't see that happening.
Had to be done
I regret pulling a Yogi'ism on you, but this sounds just like "Deja vue all over again". The slug has struck yet again it would seem. Just a couple of days ago talks were fruitful according to Graves. This should have been done last year when we had 30 mil that we sat on. Graves, always so full of optimism, seems to me to be full of something else entirely. I have little faith at this point that Graves will be able to sign Campbell. Of course, he will claim that talks are going on positively and the signing is very near, (just like it was all throughout last year), and into the off-season.
Yup...but only because the other, better and more obvious ship had already sailed. K9 is dead on (in this case...that's not meant to be a blanket statement).Had to be done
Schefter is reporting that there's going to be a record number of franchise tags used this season, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised AZ is included.
Yup! It's time to call the Atlanta Centre for Disease Control because Graves Disease is breaking out throughout the League given the number of Tags extended and expected before Monday.

No big deal. He will be signed long term, period. Doesn't matter if its today or two months from now. I have only said that about three players each of the last three years, during a time when everyone was wringing their hands over it, Wilson, Dockett, and Fitz. Campbell will be my fourth, bank on it. He is a Wiz guy and Wiz guys get re-signed.
His agent Ben Dogra makes the human snail look like Usian Bolt. He sometimes doesnt even give counter proposals for weeks at a time. He beyond any other agent out there uses time to his advantage. A deal was never going to get done last year and it was never going to get done until he got franchised because his agent Dogra would not allow his client to do it. It puts maximum pressure on the team by using time and that is how he does business.
Are you 100% sure on this?
It lets both sides get what they want. Campbell gets to shop himself and see what the market will bear. Cardinals let him shop and get to match if he gets an offer or let him go and get the picks. He sees what he can get and Cardinals get a fair market read so they don't overpay. Both sides win. Its business, not personal.

In what world do you live in that teams negotiate with Franchise players? A franchise designate hasn't been signed under that tender since Joey Galloway in 1999.
Wasnt there one more, a D player I think? Maybe even sooner then the Galloway one. This is going to bother me...
