Cards v.DBacks DRAFTS-whichscoutswon/why?

As I looked at the top 250 position players and the top 250 pitchers the Dbacks scouts were choosing from rated from BaseballAmerica, I kept noticing we'd have the say 41st pick, and take the 55th rated guy..Besides Upton, Everyplayer from the first day of the draft we picked at a higher spot than what he was rated.. Does that mean that the DBacks reached for every player they chose after Upton? 500+ players are picked from a much larger variety of teams and leagues, countries, but how is a baseball draft rated? The DBacks have only had a minor league system for around 10 years or so, they are making strong srides.
DG on the other hand this year had all of his picks up to the 168th [Lance MItchell, right?] ranked pretty much in everyone's top 100.. Please help this baseball wannabe football wasabee..

I may have misread your comments, but we actually got some top guys who could have gone earlier - Matt Torra was rated 23, but fell to us at 31. Matt Green was rated 49, fell to us at 81. Brett Jacobsen was rated 91, fell to us at 321. Those are steals.

It's not always 'reach' to take a guy ranked 20 or 30 points below your pick - we have pick 83 and the next we have is 111, and we really want a guy who is rated at 100 - we either grab him a bit early, or risk losing him by the time we pick again. All teams do that. Plus, you might move a guy up a few points because you know he'll sign immediately for a reasonable price, or you have some stats or perspective you value more than generic national averaged ratings, or he's the next rated lefty or catcher or whatever you happen to want.

Roughly 1500 players are picked - and its only from college juniors or seniors, Jr College 1 or 2 year students, or graduating HS seniors. Foreign players, independent leagues, etc are not in the June draft. The top 500 or so players are where most of the effort goes in, and after that, teams can play around a bit.

Mike Rizzo has drafted exceptionally well the last several years.

"..And in this corner.."

AZZenny Thank you for that last post.. That being said, how would I find what "The Punkdits" are saying about the Diamondbacks' draft-player by player? Baseball America seems basically bias-free from what I could tell, are there other good sources? In football, everyone and their In-Laws have opinions on how teams did in the draft...Thank you!!

GO DBACKS!!! GOCARDS!!! :notworthy
