This would suck if it's something that keeps Carlos out for awhile.

Outfielder Carlos Quentin, who injured his left shoulder on a swing Friday, did not play for the second day in a row, and manager Bob Melvin said Quentin could undergo an MRI exam exam today or Tuesday.

"It depends on what we think the severity is after (taking two days off)," Melvin said. "A lot of times you want to let it settle down a little bit for a couple of days before you get the MRI."

Quentin tweaks shoulder, unlikely for Opening Day
Scott Bordow, Tribune
The chances of Diamondbacks right fielder Carlos Quentin being ready for Opening Day diminished Thursday when he tweaked his injured right shoulder in a Cactus League game against the Chicago Cubs.

Manager Bob Melvin said Quentin, who has a slightly torn labrum, felt a twinge in his third at-bat of the day. It was the first game Quentin's played in since injuring the shoulder.

Melvin, who previously had estimated Quentin's chances of playing against the Colorado Rockies at 50-50, was less hopeful Thursday.

In other news, closer Jose Valverde slightly injured a finger on his throwing hand when his hand got caught in a car door. Valverde is expected to be ready for the season opener."

If he is out for a long period of time I don't think its that big of a deal for the production of this years line up. I think Scott Hairston will give as much production this year as Quentin would have. Where it's bad is for the long term development for Quentin.

I would rest Q until they are 100% sure he is healthy.

if he was 50/50 for opening day - why play him today in spring training?
He was fine to play. The plan was to rest him for a few days and then let him play and he would be good to go for Opening Day barring any lingering effects.

2 words....

Bob Melvin.....

No reason to put Quentin into action..especially since it appeared he tried to overly compensate for his initial injury.....

I'm sorry... I just dont have any faith in Melvin and never will..... He will ruin the young talent... Let's just hope that Moorad and Co. will come to their senses and elevate Kirk Gibson into the managerial position.. He's ideal for that role and with nearly a full Spring Training of him being in the Dbacks organization behind him..he now has a better feel of the team....

That just isn't true. The team gave him two full weeks off before deeming him fit and they wanted to evaluate him on a day to day basis. Obviously he's had a bit of a setback, but he was supposedly feeling fine before today.

He was "supposedly" feeling fine doesnt necessarily justify that he should be playing the final week of Spring Training.... Players (especially younger) never want to admit to injury or being affected because they believe in the end people will question is tolerance to pain..or would he lose his spot in the line-up (without thinking of the long-term consequences)....

It's known he has a slightly torn labrum..why risk or compond matters worse?

Quentin had nothing to prove by playing this past week.. He's obviously solidified a long-term spot in the Dbacks OF, is well-conditioned (aside from these 2 injuries) and is mentally prepared... No sense in forcing him out there.... it was best serve to rest him... Oh well......

It was probably as much quentin wanting to get back into action as much as it was Melvin forcing out there.

They did rest him. The slightly torn labrum is in his non-throwing arm and it is an injury that most guys play through and it typically isn't too big of a deal. If you aren't willing to play him at all for that injury then you are looking at sitting him for several months as it isn't something that simply goes away completely within a short time frame. I don't see what good sitting him for another three days and having him start cold on Opening Day (or opening week) would have done.

If that were the case, the question would have to be, "Who's the Manager?"

And a clarification, he was 50/50 to be ready for opening day, not 50/50 to be healthy on opening day, there's a big difference. His status for opening day was contingent on more than him just waking up and feeling good. Just because he had already earned his spot and had little to prove performance wise in spring training didn't mean that the team was going to simply sit him down for close to three weeks without even swinging a bat and then just let him start on opening day (or thereabouts), with good reason.

It looks like the D'backs are going to have a happy problem. Hairston looks to be as good as any of the starting outfielders.

Does that mean that Byrnes will be gone in a mid-season trade? Now that he's not the leadoff hitter, it's not a loss replacing him in the heart of the batting order with a young talented Hairston.

^Hairston is as good at the plate as any of our OFielders, but probably not in the field.

I do hope the Dbacks can move Byrnes mid season (heck, DaVanon too) for prospects (particularly of the pitching variety).
