The transfer portal churns for everyone, when open, even 11 hours after Purdue basketball's season concluded in a heartbreaking Sweet 16 loss to Houston.

Carmel native Brian Waddell entered the transfer portal late Saturday morning, per Verbal Commits. Waddell, a 6-foot-7, 195-pound forward, played seldomly as a walk-on but drew the awe of fans, many of whom remember his father Matt.

Waddell's father helped the Boilermakers win a pair of Big Ten championships (1994, 1995) and reach three NCAA tournaments (1993-95) while scoring 1,170 points with 460 assists. But it never came together for Waddell.

At Carmel, Waddell was a part of the state championship teams in 2019 and 2021, when he had 20 points and 10 rebounds against Lawrence North, becoming an Indiana All-Star. He averaged 15.8 points and 6.4 rebounds while shooting 60.7% from the field, 40.5% on 3s and 85.5% from the free throw line that senior season.

Plenty going on: What's next for Purdue basketball? It's no longer business as usual

Doyel: Braden Smith gave Houston problems. It honored the Purdue basketball star's greatness

He redshirted his first season and appeared in 40 games the following three, averaging 1.1 points and 0.7 rebounds in 5.9 minutes per contest. Waddell suffered a broken bone in his hand during Purdue's first exhibition game, and played through in the second, but did not play again for several weeks.

It was clear last week that Purdue was going to be active in the transfer portal, hoping to retain and surround stars Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Fletcher Loyer, to elevate beyond the Sweet 16. Even if Painter bemoaned the timing of it, among other things, he knows his team will need to improve.

It is already linked to South Dakota State transfer center Oscar Cluff, who had visits set for Purdue and Iowa State per On3.

It loses lone senior Caleb Furst, who will go onto medical school, for certain and Waddell is the first unknown domino to open up a roster spot. Men's college basketball teams can have 15 rostered players and pay them once the House vs NCAA settlement is approved, which is expected April 7.
