STURGIS — The athlete of the week poll is once again open. Get your thumbs and cell phones ready and gather round the polling booths.
The weekly athlete of the week award is being presented by Glen Oaks Community College. It's obviously very popular, as you have no doubt seen and participated in, I'm sure. Last week, Jennaya Decker of Three Rivers won the athlete of the week poll with 7,873 total votes. Finishing second overall in the voting for the award was Roni Bir of Bronson with 6,155 total votes.
That can be how these polls go sometimes. Early on, there are several student-athletes who receive votes, but often times a couple of them run away with the polls and earn several votes. That happens.
As always, you can vote as many times as you'd like. New to the polls recently is the option to vote for more than one athlete at a time, which is a pretty neat feature. By selecting more than one athlete, you don't really have to choose between members of the same school, which I know some of you will like. The polls are open until Thursday at noon.
Raegan Thaxton had a strong week for the Colon softball team. The Magi won five games and Thaxton was a big piece of the offense during the contests. She homered twice, collected 15 total hits and drove in 17 runs.
Braelynn Gimenez homered twice and drive in five runs for Bronson last week. The Vikings beat up on Maple Valley, winning 18-0 and 22-0 in a pair of games.
Clayton Grandstaff threw a no-hitter in five innings of work for White Pigeon against Lawrence last week. He dominated from the mound, striking out 11 would-be hitters in the game.
Much like Grandstaff, Brody Block dominated Lawrence from the pitching mound last week. Block struck out an incredible 17 would-be hitters from Lawrence in the game and allowed only one hit.
Tessa Hatt won a pair of races for the Sturgis track team last week in a double dual matchup that went deep into the night against Plainwell and Vicksburg. Hatt posted wins in both the 800 run and the mile.
Sydney Bir won the 400 meter run at the matchup with Plainwell and Vicksburg, running a time of 59.92 seconds. She was also part of the winning mile and two-mile relays in that dual. Then, on Saturday in Byron Center, Bir paced the field in the 400 with a time of 59.25 seconds to win.
