Jayson Tatum has been listed as doubtful for the Boston Celtics' second playoff game against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, April 23. The All-Star forward suffered a wrist injury when attempting a dunk during game one on Sunday, April 20. According to a report from ESPN's Shams Charania, Tatum has sustained a bone bruise on his shooting wrist. That injury could last deep into the postseason and will require pain management moving forward.
Tatum now joins Jaylen Brown, who is dealing with a bone bruise. Brown hasn't looked like himself since injuring his knee earlier in the season. Nevertheless, both forwards will likely look to push through the pain barrier as Boston attempts to win a second consecutive championship.
Earlier in the day, head coach Joe Mazzulla had provided an update on how Tatum had fared during practice on Tuesday.
“He was able to do some stuff,” Mazzulla said. “He was sore after the game. He’s gotten a little better today. He was able to do through some on-court work and go from there.”
Orlando has two wins against the Celtics this season, both of them coming with Tatum out of the rotation. As such, Celtics fans will now be waiting anxiously to see whether their star player will be available for Wednesday's game. Furthermore, they will likely want to see how Tatum performs when on the court, as that will provide an indication as to what to expect moving forward.
For now, though, Tatum must continue managing the pain and preparing for his next outing. After all, the Celtics have plenty of games left between now and the NBA Finals.
