Nothing really new, but postworthy nonetheless:

Rumors have linked the Celtics--who have $15 million in contracts that expire at the end of the season after trading for PG Gary Payton--to Suns SF Shawn Marion. Phoenix, having just signed PG Steve Nash and SG Quentin Richardson, is facing the prospect of G/F Joe Johnson becoming a free agent next summer and a maximum-dollar extension for PF Amare Stoudemire. Creating payroll space is a necessity for Phoenix, and Marion is the most likely target. But the Suns would like to find help at center, and the Celtics can't help them do that without getting a third team involved in a trade. . . .

I seriously hope they don't just deal Marion to create cap space to re-sign Stoudemire (and possibly JJ). They can re-sign either player to a maximum without the need for cap space, and luxury tax may not be a part of the next CBA.

Trade Proposal:

Suns:

Raef LaFrentz
Michael Stewart
Jiri Welsch

Celtics:

Shawn Marion
Howard Eisley
Dikembe Mutombo
Paul Shirley

Chicago:

Gary Payton
Cash

Suns get a Center that can shoot and block shots, a more suitable 6th man, and swap Eisley for Stewart (who's contract expires 1 year earlier). Celtics get stud Shawn Marion, a PG that will report to them, and 2 bigs. Bulls swap expiring contracts while adding a better player and Cash. Trade can't happen until October 4th or 5th because of Payton and Mutombo being recently traded...

I've been suspecting a trade in which Marion and LaFrentz are the principals for more than a month. But I read on hoopshype that LaFrentz's return from injury hasn't looked very impressive so far. I think that pretty much kills the idea, unless the reports are wrong. LaFrentz isn't "injury-prone," as many people on this board insist -- someone with one injury over the past five years just doesn't deserve that label, even if the injury was serious -- but if he's not healthy now, there's no way the Suns will acquire him.

I absolutely guarantee that the Phoenix Suns have zero interest in Raef LaFrentz at this point. I also don't believe the Suns will trade Shawn Marion until they see what they've got in the regular season.

Let's deal. Marion + Eisley for LaFrentz, Davis, Steward, if LF is indeed healthy.

Now we are at it, a better one:

Phx gets R.Davis and Welsch, and Mutombo.

Boston gets Marion.

Chi gets payton and agree to pay him one mil to retire.

Phx team:

Mutombo/Jake/Lampe
Amare/Vroman
JJ/Zarko/Welsch
Q/Davis/CJ
Nash/Barbosa

I think that report is just someone else realizing the Shawn Marion - Danny Ainge connection.

It is the first time I have seen published information about the Celts interested in Marion. I wouldn't take it for anything.

Carmelo Anthony is a fool. There is no way I would have guaranteed gold for this US team. In fact I would have bet against it even before I saw the team play.

However I do stand by my original guaranteed that the Phoenix Suns have no interest in Raef LaFrentz. I would also add that they do not want Ricky Davis.

Really? Says who? I don't think the Suns would have a problem having Nash, Quentin and Shawn on the payroll and giving both JJ and Amare decent extensions AS LONG AS THEY ARE WINNING.

LaFrentz has way negative trade value. And Stewart is another bad contract. That's horrible.

I agree. In no way am I interested in giving up Marion for Lafrentz. I dont care who else they through in and if they take Eisley.
