CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLAYER RATINGS | Bayern Munich 1-2 Inter

Bayern Munich will have a lot of work to do heading to the San Siro next week as a strong defensive performance from Inter helped them beat the hosts 2-1.

For you Bundesliga sickos (like myself), this Inter side had a lot of Bundesliga heritage. Yann Sommer and Benjamin Pavard both faced their old club in Bayern (real ones know Sommer from where he is actually known from – Gladbach). Marcus Thuram also plied his trade in the Niederrhein. While Henrik Mkhitaryan burst onto the scene at Borussia Dortmund, Hakan Calhanoglu is German-born and played for Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen before swapping the Rhein for Lake Como (understandable).

Anyway, the first half.

Bayern were on top for most of the half, but the majority of their efforts in front of goal were easily dealt with by Sommer. The hosts’ best chance of the half came when Harry Kane was left wide open in the Inter box (If you were a betting individual, you would bet your house on Kane scoring this…) and he hit the outside of the post (…you are now homeless).

Then, the Italians began to grow into the game and had a few half chances, then a long ball is played down by Thuram, who links up with Lautaro Martinez, who plays the ball out wide to Carlos Augusto, who played the ball into Thuram, who played it back to Martinez, who opened the scoring. The partnership of Martinez and Thuram (LaThuram (is this a thing?, do people call them that? It doesn’t sound as good as LuLa.) caused Bayern’s defence issues throughout the night.

The second half followed much of the same pattern as the first, Bayern dominant but struggling to break down a well-worked Inter defence, and when they did have the chance, they were unable to take it. Both Gnabry and Kane had great chances to equalise in the second half but could not take their chances. Bayern continued to push and push, and then they finally equalised in the 84th minute when Konrad Laimer’s cross across the face of the goal was met by who else than Thomas Müller.

When it looked like Bayern were pushing for a winner, Inter, against the run of play, countered and a cross from Augusto was met by substitute Davide Frattesi to give the I Nerazzuri the lead once again.

This sets up a difficult challenge for Bayern heading to the San Siro next week as they will have to score two against a team who have only conceded three goals (including tonight) in the whole of the Champions League competition.

On top of this, there is little quality rotation, due to A LOT of injuries, allowed within the squad at the weekend as they face another important game against Borussia Dortmund. This next week will be massive for the rest of Bayern’s season, not only do they face elimination from the Champions League, but dropping points to Dortmund will again open the door for Leverkusen to close the gap.

GGFN Man of the Match: Yann Sommer (8)

Deja vu?

Yann Sommer stepping up against Bayern. This could be any of the 19 games that Gladbach played Bayern, where Sommer would have been in goal. An impressive six saves tonight to keep a relentless Bayern out. The Swiss showed tonight why, and I may be slightly biased here, he is one of the most underrated keepers in the world and why he is probably the best pure shot stopper in the world.

Not just Sommer, but it was an overall great defensive performance from Inter. Lautaro Martinez and former ex-Gladbach player (I am going to keep doing this) Marcus Thuram were also very good tonight.

But Sommer…
