Charlie Ward is taking the next step in his coaching career.

Ward, the former Florida State two-sport star and Heisman Trophy winner, is finalizing a deal to become Florida A&M's next men's basketball coach, the Tallahassee Democrat has confirmed.

The news was first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel on April 16. The hire is pending final board approval at 3 p.m. April 16.

Ward, who led FSU football to the 1993 national championship and also played in the NBA, will replace Patrick Crarey.

Crarey left FAMU for Grambling State after one season.

Ward has been the boys' basketball coach at Florida High, where he led the Seminoles to a state championship in 2022.
